All Smiles on Senior Day as Hornets Sweep Cougars

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Hornets continued rolling in conference play, picking up an 80-51 win over Averett on Senior Day inside the Wilkins Athletics and Events Center on Saturday afternoon.  Shenandoah (17-4, 12-2) was led by Gabby Krstofiak who had a career-high 15 points on 7-11 from the field, a perfect 1-1 from the line, had two steals, a block, an assist and a rebound.  Maddie Kimble had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and was a perfect 5-5 from the line.  Kayla Maxson and Shawnise Campbell each had 10 points, while Emily Williams and Terese Greene each chipped in with nine points.

Averett jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but Maddie Kimble got the Hornets on the board and tied the game at the 7:25 mark.  Gabby Krystofiak gave the Hornets the lead on a layup off an assist from Emily Williams.  Williams got the board shortly after that with her first field goal of the game as the lead grew to 6-2.  Averett got a basket to cut the lead in half, but Terese Greene and Krystofiak pushed the lead to eight at 12-4 with just over 3:30 left in the first.  The Cougars hit a three with 2:06 left in the quarter, but Emily Williams converted an and-one, and the Hornets took a 17-11 lead into the second quarter.

It was tough sledding to start the second quarter, but Shawnise Campbell hit a layup followed by another jumper from Kyrstofiak as the lead went back up to eight at 21-13.  Both teams struggled over four minutes until Zoe Smith hit a layup at 3:30 as the lead was back to seven points at 23-16.  Maggie Rooklin pushed the lead back to nine before Maddie Kimble hit two free throws as the lead grew to double-digits.  Maggie Rooklin nailed a three with a minute to go in the half and then Emily Williams scored one final layup as the clock ran out in the half.  Shenandoah took 32-18 lead going into the break.

Terese Greene and Gabby Krystofiak scored the first two baskets for the Hornets before giving up one free throw to Averett just over 90 seconds into the quarter.  Shenandoah then went on a 13-0 run after baskets and free throws from Campbell, Krystofiak, Williams, and Greene as the lead grew to 30.  After two Cougar free throws, Kayla Maxson came off the bench pushing the lead back 30 at 51-21.  Jessica Littlejohn split a pair from the line before Shawnise Campbell, Kayla Maxson and a triple from Maggie Rooklin as Shenandoah led 59-27 heading into the final quarter.

Terese Greene and Maddie Kimble picked up where they left off and came out firing in the fourth.  Greene hit an opening three and Kimble converted a three the old-fashioned way.  Campbell scored back-to-back layups with the second coming off an assist from Meredith Lloyd to push the lead to 37 at 69-32.  It was an all-around fantastic effort from the Hornet offense and defense as Shenandoah scored at least 80 points for the third time this season.
