Slow Start Not a Problem as Hornets Get Revenge on Yellow Jackets

ASHLAND, Va. – The Shenandoah women's basketball team avenged a 72-70 overtime loss at home to Randolph-Macon with a 47-44 win over the host Yellow Jackets Wednesday evening.  The Hornets (18-4, 13-2 ODAC) got off to a slow start in the first quarter, finding themselves down 10-0 before scoring their first basket nearly seven minutes into the game.  Shenandoah was led by Terese Greene with 13 points on 5-14 shooting, 2-2 from the line, two rebounds a blocked shot, and six steals.  Joining Greene, was Kayla Maxson off the bench also with 13 points on 5-12 shooting from the floor, including 3-4 from deep, with three assists, a steal and a rebound.  Shawnise Campbell was the other Hornet in double-digits with 11 points on 4-7 from the floor, going 3-4 from the line and chipped in with five rebounds.

The Hornets found themselves in a 10-0 hole in the first missing on their first 10 shots before Terese Greene finally got the Hornets on the board with a running floater from the foul line with the shot clock running down.  Emily Williams split a pair of free throws to cut the lead to seven with 2:06 left in the quarter, but Macon hit another three pushing the lead back to 10.  Kayla Maxson drilled the first triple of the game and the Hornets were down 13-6 going into the second.

Shawnise Campbell got the Hornets on the board quickly in the second quarter with a layup at the 9:09 mark cutting the lead to five at 13-8.  Campbell scored again before Gabby Krystofiak nailed a three off an assist from Kayla MaxsonTerese Greene's layup cut the lead back to six at 21-15 with under four minutes to play in the half.  Zoe Smith and Shawnise Campbell went a combined 3-4 from the line and another Terese Greene layup made it a 23-20 game going into the half.

Shawnise Campbell cut the lead to one 90 seconds into the third quarter, before giving the Hornets their first lead of the game with foul line jumper.  Terese Greene gave the Hornets their biggest lead of the game converting on two free throws making the score 26-23 in favor of Shenandoah.  Randolph-Macon scored an and one to retake a two-point lead at 28-26.  Kayla Maxson tied the game on a layup with just over five minutes to play in the third.  Campbell nailed two free throws as the Hornets regained the lead in a back-and-forth, close, contest.  With 2:33 left in the quarter, the Yellow Jackets took the lead on a made three, but Kayla Maxson hit back-to-back threes and the Hornets had a 36-35 lead with just over a minute to go in the quarter.  Emily Williams scored the last four points of the quarter, and Shenandoah took a 40-36 lead heading into the fourth.

Randolph-Macon went on a 5-0 run to start the fourth before Terese Greene hit a jumper and converted the free throw to retake the lead 43-41 with 5:17 left to go in the game.  Greene put the Hornets back up by one and Kayla Maxson sealed the game with a jumper with 2:15 left to play.  Shenandoah held the Yellow Jackets scoreless over the final 4:55 in the game, only surrendering a free throw.  The Hornets missed an opportunity to go up by five, with 20 seconds left to play and Randolph-Macon called timeout.  With flashbacks of the first matchup in Winchester, where the Yellow Jackets hit a jumper to tie the game as time expired, before winning in overtime on a last-second shot, the Hornets played stifling defense as the Yellow Jackets could not get a quality shot off and the Hornets won the game.
Up next for the Hornets, Shenandoah will play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they go for the season sweep of Roanoke.  That game is scheduled to tip off at 4:30.
