GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Shenandoah University baseball team split a conference doubleheader with the Guilford Quakers. Shenandoah took game one 4-1 in extra innings and the Quakers took game two 23-13, in a game that was called due to darkness in the 8
th.
Chandler Ballenger's single in the fifth gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead, but Guilford tied the game in the 6
th with a home run. In extra innings,
Connor Houser reached first on an error sacrifice bunt, and two runs scored.
Matt House added an insurance run on a sacrifice bunt in the 13
th.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jaimie Padilla singled in the first, but the Hornets could not push a run across.
- In the bottom of the first, Guilford had two hits, but Jacob Bell avoided any trouble.
- Hornets had the bases loaded in the second, but an inning-ended double play kept the game scoreless.
- Padilla picked up his second hit in the third, but again SU left two on base.
- Padilla singled again in the fifth and quickly stole second and third. Chandler Ballenger singled to score Padilla.
- Guilford homered in the sixth to tie the game.
- Jacob Bell went 8 strong innings before giving way to Ricky Snyder who went 1.1 of scoreless baseball.
- Joey Mitchell, fresh off his third win of the season on Wednesday in extra innings, then 1.2 of 1 hit baseball to keep the Hornets' undefeated conference record alive.
- In the 13th inning, Peace Bucher led off with a walk before Haden Madagan walked to put two runners on with no outs. Connor Houser put down a sacrifice bunt and then ended up reaching on an error to score Bucher and Madagan. Matt House added an insurance run with a sacrifice bunt to score Houser.
- Anthony Arrichiello, who came on in the 12th, recorded the first two outs in the 13th, before surrendering a single, and then got the last out to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Guilford jumped out a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off a three-run home run.
- Guilford added seven more in the second, as the Hornets were down 10-0 in the second.
- Kyle Garrett had a one-out walk before Chandler Ballenger doubled to put runners on 2nd and third with two outs. Pearce Bucher then doubled to right center and the Hornets were on the board, down 10-2.
- Guilford added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead back to 12-2.
- In the top of the fifth, the Hornets struck for four runs to cut the lead in half, 12-6, all with two outs. Gavin Horning singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then Chandler Ballenger walked to put two runners on. Pearce Bucher singled through the right side to score Horning. Haden Madagan homered to left center, scoring Ballenger and Bucher, forcing the Quakers to go to the pen.
- Unfortunately, the Quakers answered with 11 runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth off of five hits and taking advantage of three Hornet errors.
- Then in the sixth, the comeback started. Scott Wilson singled to right field to lead off the inning. The Quakers then got the next two outs before Kyle Garrett walked. Horning was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chandler Ballenger singled to score Wilson and Garrett. Pearce Bucher hit his second double of the game to score Horning. Haden Madagan followed that with a double of his own to plate Bucher and Ballenger. The rally ended there with the Hornets scoring five runs on four hits.
- In the eighth, Anthony Arrichiello drew a lead-off walk before Zach Furtado hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer to centerfield, as the Hornets cut the lead to 23-13.
- The Hornets were able to retire the Quakers in the eighth to keep it a 10-run game.
- In the ninth, the Hornets scored nine runs and had the game-tying run on third base, but the game was called due to darkness, and the comeback was cut short as the Hornets fell 23-22 almost completing an impossible comeback.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will return home on Wednesday as they welcome Bridgewater in for a single midweek conference game before hosting Averett this weekend at home for a doubleheader.
