Softball Puts Knights to Bed in Sweep

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team improves its winning streak to six games with a sweep over Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference home doubleheader.

The Hornets (6-0) used two big innings to defeat the Knights (0-2) including a six-run sixth inning in the 9-5 game one victory and an eight-run fifth inning in a 9-1 win in the second game.

How It Happened
  • Southern Virginia tripled in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead but the Hornets responded right away with a single through the right side from Makayla Cox scoring Allison McQueeney for the tying run.
  • The Knights put the pressure on again by scoring three in the second. Down 4-1, Tiffany Bower doubled in SU's second run, cutting the deficit in half.
  • In the sixth inning, Shenandoah put the game away with a six-run inning.
  • Sarah Medellin started the run off with a RBI single up the middle. Brenna Westwood followed the single up with a triple to right center, making it a 5-4 game in favor of SVU.
  • Taylor Smith tied the game with another Hornets' extra base hit. McNeill really opened up the game with a bases-clearing double, putting her team up by three. McNeill advanced to third on an error and scored on another Knights error, plating the final run of the game.
  • Smith pitched a perfect seventh inning to lock up the win for Shenandoah.

How It Happened
  • Southern Virginia scored it's only run of the game with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first. They held the lead until SU tied it up in the third as Danielle McNeill singled to center with Savannah Thorne scoring the run. Thorne went on to pitch a one-two-three fourth inning keeping the game tied.
  • The game stayed tied until Shenandoah plated eight runs in the fifth.
  • Tiffany Bower started the fifth with a double with Kristen Blee coming into the game as her pinch runner. Sarah Medellin scored Blee two batters later to put SU up.
  • SU added another run thanks to a fielding error by the Knights. A Rachael Blumenschine single scored two runs. SU led 5-1 with just one out in the inning.
  • McNeill came to the plate with bases loaded and cleared them with a double, adding three RBIs to her day. McNeill was able to advance to third on another SVU error. With one out left in the inning, Makayla Cox ended the game on a double to left field, driving in McNeill.
