Softball Swept By Averett in Friday Doubleheader

DANVILLE, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team dropped two ODAC games at Averett University on Friday afternoon. The Hornets (8-12, 0-6 ODAC) lost game one 5-1 and held a 5-3 lead in game two, but the Cougars (10-10, 4-0) scored three runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 6-5 win.

Winning Pitcher - Taylor Sullivan (4-6)
Losing Pitcher - Kayla Stephenson (2-3)

Top Performers
Tiffany Bower - 2-3, 1 double
Taylor Smith - 3.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 SO. At the plate - 1-3, 1 RBI

How It Happened
  • Averett took a 2-0 lead in the first on three hits including a double to left center that drove in the first run of the day. Kayla Stephenson retired the Cougars in order in the second but the home team responded with three runs in the third inning. They scored two of the runs on balls that didn't leave the infield and added a single through the right side to take a 5-0 lead.
  • Averett's starting pitcher held the Hornets without a base runner through the first four innings. The Hornets broke the perfect game attempt on a lead-off double from Tiffany Bower in the fifth. Eliza Hunt came in to pinch run for Bower and Hunt would score on a Taylor Smith single, with Smith advancing to second on the throw. The Cougars got right back to it and got the next three Hornets out to end the inning.
  • Shenandoah picked up four more hits in the game but were unable to complete the comeback as Averett held on for the win.

GAME TWO RECAP

Pitching Decisions
Winning Pitcher - Taylor Sullivan (5-6)
Losing Pitcher - Savannah Thorne (4-5)

Top Performers
Sarah Medellin - 2-3, 2 runs
Breena Westwood - 1-3, 2 RBI
Paige Eagleton - 1-2, 1 RBI
Rachael Blumenschine - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 double
Kelsey Freeman - 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 hits allowed

How It Happened
  • After Savannah Thorne got the Cougars to strand a runner in scoring position in the first inning, the Hornets came to bat in the second and stringed together a two-out rally. Singles from Sarah Medellin and Throne started the rally, which put two runners on base for SU. Paige Eagleton added the Hornets' third consecutive single in the next at-bat and drove in Medellin, as SU went up 1-0. Rachael Blumenschine doubled to left center which scored Thorne and put SU up 2-0 in the middle of the second. However, Averett didn't let the Hornets lead for long, as the home team took a 3-2 lead by the end of the inning.
  • The score stayed the same until the Hornets regained the lead in the fourth inning. Medellin and Thorne once again singled back-to-back to get the Hornets rally started. Eagleton followed that up with a fielder's choice to reach first as Medellin and Thorne each moved up a base. Allison McQueeney drew a bases-loaded walk, tying the game, 3-3.
  • On the next at-bat, Breena Westwood hit a ball into the outfield and scored Thorne and Eagleton, putting SU up once again, 5-3. In the fifth inning, SU had a chance to further its lead with two runners in scoring position and just one out. However, Averett struck out two SU batters to end the inning. Averett capitalized and drove in three runs on four hits, with the final run ending up as the eventual game-winner. In the sixth and seventh innings, Averett held the Hornets without a base runner.
