LEXINGTON, Va. - In a battle between two nationally ranked ODAC teams, the No. 21 Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team lost 7-5 at No. 6 Washington & Lee University on Wednesday night.

The game marked the fourth time the Hornets (9-3, 4-2 ODAC) have played a top 25 team this season. SU jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Generals (11-3, 7-0) responded with six consecutive goals to claim the lead and hold off the visitors.

How It Happened
  • The Generals had the first chance to score on a free position shot early in the contest, but the shot was blocked before it could reach the cage. Shenandoah took the blocked shot and minutes later turned it into the opening goal as Ainsley Buckner got SU on the board.
  • With just under 8:30 left in the first, SU forced W&L to turnover the ball and Gabriella Raspanti scooped up the ground ball to give SU possession. 20 seconds later Buckner fed a pass to Amy Bell, who then buried the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0.
  • Another Generals turnover, this time caused by Talia Maria, created an offensive chance for Shenandoah. The Hornets capitalized and got their third goal of the quarter, this time from Emily Lerch.
  • After taking the first quarter lead, Shenandoah was held scoreless for the next two and a half quarters as the home team went on to place six unanswered goals, taking a 6-3 advantage in the third.
  • First-year, Alex Ripkin ended the Hornets' scoring drought with a goal just to the right of the W&L goalie. The Hornets remained down by two and caught a break as a goal was waved off for Washington & Lee in the final seconds of the third.
  • In the fourth, Kate Vendemia brought SU to within one as she scored a man-up goal with 7:07 remaining in the fourth. Lerch had a chance to tie the game minutes later but the shot was saved and the Generals went down the field and scored the insurance tally to secure the win.
