Softball Wins Game Two to Split with Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team earned a win in the latter half of an ODAC doubleheader to split with Ferrum College on the road on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (14-24, 5-15 ODAC) used two separate three-run innings in game two to take an 8-4 win against the Panthers (9-29, 7-15), after FC won the first game 4-3.

GAME ONE RECAP

  • Shenandoah went down in order to start the game and in the bottom of the first Ferrum picked up a one-out double to get the first base runner of the game. Starter, Kayla Stephenson forced two groundouts to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
  • In the third inning, Ferrum hit an infield single to put a runner on first with one out. Following the hit, SU brought in Savannah Thorne to pitch. FC then doubled down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs in the inning, a single to center field brought home both runners, putting Ferrum up 2-0 at the end of three.
  • Allison McQueeney singled to lead off the fourth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tiffany Bower. Sarah Medellin flew out to center, allowing McQueeney to move to third. Paige Eagleton then singled to right field, bringing McQueeney home to put the first run of the day on the board for SU.
  • Ferrum added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a double to make it 3-1.
  • After two quick outs in the top of the fifth, Rachael Blumenschine stepped up to the plate with her team still trailing by two. Blumenschine cut the Hornets' deficit in half by hitting a solo shot to left field.
  • Abigail Campbell came into pitch in the fourth inning and pitched a stellar inning in the fifth to retire the Panthers in order and keep the score at 3-2.
  • Shenandoah put the go-ahead run on base in the sixth, as Tiffany Bower began the inning with a single, and Danielle McNeill was hit by pitch. However, a groundout to third ended the inning and left the go-ahead run stranded. Three straight base runners for Ferrum in the bottom of the inning helped them take a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh.
  • Thorne started the seventh inning with a double to bring the tying run to the plate. Brenna Westwood doubled two batters later to score Thorne and make it a 4-3 ballgame. McQueeney singled through the left side, putting runners on the corners for SU. Ferrum, however, ended the game with two groundouts to take the game one win.

GAME TWO RECAP

  • The Hornets started game two on a tear as Brenna Westwood doubled down to left field. Panthers made a pitching change one batter into the game. The next SU batter, Allison McQueeney, singled to third to put runners on the corners for SU. Shenandoah ran a double steal, allowing Westwood to steal home for the first run of the game.
  • This brought Paige Eagleton to the plate and she furthered the Hornets' lead on a two-run home run to right field, bringing SU's lead to 3-0.
  • A double and an SU error helped the Panthers put a runner on third base with no outs to start the bottom of the second. Three batters later, FC had two runners in scoring position after a single and a stolen base. Ferrum scored twice in the next two at-bats on a groundout to short and a passed ball. SU led 3-2 at the end of the second.
  • In the third, Eagleton hit a two-out single to put herself on first and move Tiffany Bower to second. Danielle McNeill popped one up to right field but SU caught a break as the Panthers' fielder dropped the ball, allowing Eagleton and Bower to score. McNeill came around to score as Hannah Evans singled to right center. Ferrum added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, as SU led 6-4 through three.
  • The score remained the same up to the sixth inning until Westwood and McQueeney each picked up hits again, allowing Westwood to score on a sacrifice fly from Bower and McQueeney to cross the plate on a single by Medellin.
  • Meghan Gaskins, who picked up the win for Shenandoah, retired six of the next eight Ferrum batters to secure the win and keep the Hornets' playoff hopes alive.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah concludes it's regular season tomorrow afternoon against Randolph College at home in an ODAC doubleheader which starts at 1 p.m. Randolph currently sits as the eight-seed in the standings and a sweep by SU tomorrow would put the Hornets, Panthers, and WildCats in a three-way tie for the final spot in the ODAC Tournament.
