Hornets Fall To Saints in Season Finale

TYSONS, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team dropped their final game of the regular season on Tuesday night to Marymount University at Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia, the site of the final four teams for ODAC baseball.  The Hornets (25-15) fell to the Saints 9-7 after the Saints scored four runs late in the eighth inning to take the lead.  Michael Meyers got the start for the Hornets coming off his eight-inning, three-hit outing last week against Penn-State Harrisburg.  Meyers went two innings tonight giving up two hits and two runs before it turned into a bullpen game for the Hornets.  Pearce Bucher led the Hornets with three hits and an RBI.  Connor Houser and Matt House were the other two Hornets with multiple hits, each having two.

Winning Pitcher: Sean Quinn (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Anthony Arrichiello (2-3)

Ricky Snyder: 1 IP, 0 hits, 2 walks
Ryan Seifert: 1 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Frankie Ritter led the game off with a double to left field, and that hit is now tied for the most hits in Division III history.  Matt House followed Ritter's double with a single to short, advancing Ritter to third.  Gavin Horning hit a fly ball to center, deep enough to score Ritter and give the Hornets a 1-0.
  • Meyers started for the Hornets and gave up a leadoff single.  That runner advanced to second on a groundout Ballenger.  The runner then stole third with only one out, but Meyers got the next two batters to end the inning.
  • The second started with a bang, with Pearce Bucher and Connor Houser both hitting home runs to give Shenandoah a 3-0 lead.  Bucher's home run was the eighth of the season, which is a new season-high.  After the home runs, Haden Madagan was hit by a pitch, but stranded on base as the Saints retired the next three batters.
  • Back-to-back one-out walks put two runners on base.  Meyers got the next batter to pop up to short but then surrendered a double to right field as both runners scored to make it a 3-2 game.
  • After the Hornets went down in order in the third, Jackson Sherman took over on the mound for the Hornets in the third.  Sherman got the first two batters before a walk and single put runners on the corners.  Before Sherman got the final out with a strike out, the runner from third stole home to tie the game at 3.
  • In the fourth, Pearce Bucher led off with a single before Connor Houser drew a walk.  After Haden Madagan flew out to center, Brody Pickette hit into a double play to end the inning.
  • Ricky Snyder took over for Sherman and the first batter reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball.  The next batter walked before Snyder got the next two outs.  He then walked the bases loaded but got the final out on a strike out.
  • Cameron Carrow led the fifth off with a single through left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Matt House walked before Gavin Horning was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chandler Ballenger and Connor Houser were hit by pitches to each bring home runs.  Haden Madagan and Brody Pickette drew two-out walks as two more runs scored to make it a 7-3 game.
  • Marymount got one back in the fifth as Brian Ferreira took over on the mound.  A lead off walk advanced to second on a wild pitch, before advancing to third on a flyout.  Ferreira hit the next guy, before getting the next batter to strike out.  The Saints got their run back on a wild pitch and it was now a 7-4 game.
  • Matt House singled in the sixth, but that was the only hit or runner the Hornets in that frame.  Jacob Gilbert took over for Ferreira and gave up a lead off single.  The runner stole second before getting the first out with a strike out.  A grounder to third was the second out of the inning, but the runner moved to third on the play.  A double brought home a run for the Saints to cut the lead to 7-5.  The Saints tried to steal home for the second time, but this time the Hornets got the out at the plate.
  • Bucher led the seventh off with a single and then Connor Houser sacrificed him to second, but the Saints got the next two outs as the Hornets could not add an insurance run.
  • Ryan Seifert pitched the seventh, and with one out gave up back-to-back singles but then was able to get the final two outs of the inning.
  • In the eighth, House reached on an error and stole second, but again was stranded in scoring position.
  • Anthony Arrichiello was called upon to pitch the eighth for the Hornets and walked the first batter he faced.  The Hornets got a ground ball but were only able to get the lead runner and not turn the double play.  Back-to-back singles led to a run and Saints to cut the lead to 7-6.  Joey Mitchell came on to get out of the jam and gave up a single to the first batter he saw to load the bases.  A walk tied the game at 7, before a sac fly and a single brought home two more runs and give the Saints a 9-7 lead.
  • With the Hornets down to their final three outs, Connor Houser singled to left field and advanced to second on a balk with two outs, but the Saints got the final out of the game to secure the 9-7 win.
