SALEM, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team, after winning the opening-round playoff matchup with Guilford on Saturday, traveled down to Salem for a quarterfinal match with the Maroons. From that game on Sunday, with
Logan Clingerman's six goals, he now has the new single-season points record. This is the third straight year that the Hornets are making an appearance in the ODAC Quarterfinals. In a rematch from an earlier game this season, Roanoke defeated the Hornets 29-8 at home in Winchester. In this quarterfinal game, The Hornets (11-8, 6-3) put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell 16-6 to Roanoke.
Stephen Graham and
Tyler Held each led the Hornets with two goals, while
Matt Daniel and
Austin Sydnor were the other Hornets to score.
Sam Poster and
Josh Boonshaft picked up the only assists for the Hornets. The Hornets were 10-25 from the face off circle as
Austin Galler went 9-18 with
Jason Forchetti going 1-7.
Mark Isabelle was fantastic for the Hornets and stood on his head, making 19 saves and keeping the Hornets in the game. With those 19 saves Isabelle surpassed 800 career saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Maroons won the opening face off of the contest and Mark Isabelle was instantly tested and up to the task as he made the first save of the game.
- The Maroons caused a turnover on the Hornets as Shenandoah failed to clear the ball, and Roanoke had another shot on goal but again Isabelle came up big with a save.
- On the Hornets' first offensive attack, the Maroons forced another turnover before they could get a shot off.
- From that turnover, Roanoke fired another shot that the Hornet defense blocked, but after getting the ball back the Maroons finally cashed in to take a 1-0 lead.
- Isabelle was under constant pressure as Roanoke continued to fire shots his way that were saved.
- The Hornets picked up a penalty as Isabelle made a save, took the ball down the field himself, and found a cutting Logan Clingerman, who had his shot saved. As the Hornets scrambled back, they went offside and Roanoke made them pay, scoring twice to increase the lead to 3-0 with under 11 minutes to play in the quarter.
- The Hornets had their best chance in the first when Bryan Berryhill and Austin Sydnor both fired shots that the Maroon keeper saved and on the next possession, Roanoke came down and scored their fourth goal.
- Roanoke continued applying pressure firing three more shots, one blocked, one wide, and the third saved by Isabelle. The Hornets cleared the ball and Stephen Graham got a shot off, but it went wide and Shenandoah did not have anyone behind the net. Roanoke came down and scored on the following play to make it 5-0.
- Off the face off, Roanoke got another shot off that sailed wide. On the next shot, it looked like Isabelle got a piece of it, but it trickled in under his stick for the 6th Roanoke goal.
- Roanoke won the face off again, got a shot off that also went wide, and on the following shot Roanoke beat Isabelle again as the lead increased to 7-0.
- Caleb Kelley caused a turnover, and as the Hornets set their offense up, they called timeout. Off of the timeout, Shenandoah drew a penalty to get an extra man opportunity.
- The Hornets worked the ball around as Clingerman fired a shot. Roanoke killed the penalty as Matt Daniel's shot was saved.
- Roanoke turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, but the clock ran out as the Hornets were not able to get a shot off.
- Roanoke won the opening face off in the second and scored on their opening possession.
- Austin Galler won his first face off and as Austin Sydnor raced down the field, Tyler Held's shot clanged off the post. Bryan Berryhill took the shot clock all the way down and got one more shot off as it went wide of the cage.
- Isabelle made another save and found Holt streaking down the field, the pass went awry leading to another Shenandoah turnover.
- Isabelle continued to make saves for the Hornets and after Jonathan Hammond forced a turnover, the Hornets had an odd-man rush as Matt Daniel's shot hit the post and it was the Maroons' ball going the other way.
- Roanoke was playing stifling defense and forced a failed clear from Shenandoah and the Maroons made them pay as the lead increased to 9-0.
- Off a Hornet turnover, Roanoke fired another shot toward Isabelle, he made the save, his eighth of the game so far.
- The Hornets cleared the ball and called timeout. Off the timeout, the Hornets finally got on the board as Sam Poster found Matt Daniel and the Hornets were on the board, trailing 9-1 with 6 minutes to go.
- The Maroons won the face off and fired a shot, which Isabelle saved, as the Hornets cleared the ball, Graham found Daniel again, this time the keeper slid over in time to make the save denying Daniel.
- The Hornets had a good offensive set going but were called for an illegal screen. As Roanoke raced down the field, Bradley Holt chased the attacker down from behind and caused the turnover. Tyler Held then scored off an assist from Josh Boonshaft.
- With the shot clock running down, Isabelle came up with another save, but the Hornets failed to clear the ball successfully, and Roanoke scored off the turnover making it a 10-2 game with under a minute to go in the half.
- The Hornets won the face off and Graham forced a shot early in the clock, which Roanoke saved. The Maroons got one more goal before the half ended and took a 11-2 lead into the break.
- Roanoke picked up a penalty as the half was ending, so Shenandoah started the third quarter on the power play. Shenandoah got three shots off during the penalty, with Roanoke making a save on the final attempt.
- Off of the save, Roanoke marched down the field and scored on their first possession of the half.
- Galler won the face off for the Hornets and as the Hornets worked the ball around the offensive zone, Stephen Graham beat the keeper for the Hornets' third goal.
- Roanoke won the ensuing face off as Isabelle came up with another save, both teams forced turnovers, and as the Hornets got the ball back, Logan Clingerman was denied
- The Hornets trying to mount a comeback, Shenandoah applied more pressure on the Roanoke defense as shots from Austin Sydnor and Logan Clingerman were saved by the goalie. On the possession going the other way, Roanoke scored to make it a 10-goal difference.
- Roanoke won the face off, and Isabelle saved another shot. On the clear attempt, Austin Sydnor took the ball behind the cage and waited for the offense to set up. Sydnor ran back toward the goal and with his back to the goalie fired a no-look shot behind him for the goal.
- Off another Isabelle save, the Hornets picked up a goal from Stephen Graham as it was now a 13-5 game with just over 4 minutes to play in the third.
- In the fourth, Roanoke won the opening face off, but Shenandoah caused the turnover to gain possession back.
- Off a timeout, Clingerman fired a shot that went just wide. But Roanoke forced a turnover and scored on the other end.
- Austin Galler won the face off as Clingerman fired a shot that was saved. Tyler Held picked the ground ball up and scored for the Hornets.
- Every time the Hornets gained a little momentum, Roanoke forced a turnover to slow them down, on the latest turnover Roanoke made the Hornets pay as the lead was back to 9 goals at 15-6.
- With the Hornets on the power play, Roanoke forced a turnover killed the penalty and took a shot, but Isabelle came up with his 18th save of the game.
- On the Hornets' next offensive possession, Held and Kelley got shots off, that both went wide, and Roanoke came down to score to push it back to a 16-6 game.
- Galler won another face off and after turnovers by both teams, Clingerman and Jet Hayes fired shots that did not beat the keeper.
- Jonathan Hammond caused a turnover and Bradley Holt got a clean look at a shot in transition, but the Maroon goalie came up with a huge save.
- That would be the last attempt that Shenandoah had as the clock ran out and Roanoke won 16-6 to advance to the semifinals.
The season ends for the Hornets with the most wins in program history, as the Hornets fell to the Maroons for the second time this season, and for the third straight year in the Quarterfinals.
