Ritter Ties NCAA Record in Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team defeated ODAC rival Bridgewater College, 6-5, on the road on Tuesday afternoon. Graduate student, Frankie Ritter, picked up career hit 327, which ties the NCAA Division III record for hits in a career.

The Hornets (20-8, 9-6 ODAC) trailed entering the eighth inning, 5-4. A double from Connor Houser tied the game, 5-5. The Eagles (20-11, 8-6) intentionally walked Frankie Ritter, which brought Jaime Padilla to the plate. Padilla grounded out to the shortstop but got the job done by driving in the eventual winning run. Joey Mitchell picked up the win after shutting down Bridgwater in the final three innings.

How it Happened
  • Nine different Hornets had a hit today, with Jaime Padilla kicking things off in the first with an infield single. Padilla stole second but the Eagles were able to get out of the inning. Bridgewater capitalized and drew two walks to start the day at the plate. Both walks scored on a single and a double play ball. BC led 2-0 at the end of the first.
  • In the second inning, Shenandoah struck out and flew out to right to begin the frame. Walks to Brody Pickette and Haden Madagan put two Hornets on base, with two outs. This brought Luke Keister to the plate and the sophomore, second basemen delivered with a double to left center, tying the game.
  • With Keister standing on second, Frankie Ritter lined a ball through the left side to plate Keister and in the process tie the NCAA Division III record for hits in a career.
  • After a lead-off walk for the Eagles in the bottom half of the second, SU went to the bullpen and called upon Parker Farrington. Farrington got the runner on first out with a fielder's choice, but then allowed a single and walk to load the bases. However, the lefty got out of the jam with a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
  • The Eagles retired the Hornets in order in the third and once again capitalized with a lead-off single in the bottom half of the inning. The very next batter drove a ball over the fence in left field to put the Eagles on top, 4-3.
  • In the sixth inning, and the Hornets still trailing, Pearce Bucher got them on the right track with a single through the right side. A passed ball advanced the doctoral student to second, as Pickette then moved him to third on a single to left. Madagan flew out far enough to center field, that Bucher was able to score on the sacrifice fly, tying the game once again.
  • Bridgewater didn't let the game stay tied for long, as in the bottom of that same inning they took the lead with two singles and a sac bunt. This ended the day for Farrington and brought Joey Mitchell to the mound.
  • In the seventh, a walk to Ritter, hit by pitch to Chandler Ballenger, and a single by Kyle Garrett loaded the bases for SU with just one out. Unfortunately, the Hornets hit into a double play to end the inning and leave the inning still trailing. Mitchell kept the game at 5-4 for Shenandoah by holding Bridgewater hitless in the bottom of the inning.
  • The tides changed in the eighth inning as Andrew Falk, who started at DH, hit a lead-off single up the middle. Falk stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Madagan reached base on an error and also pushed Falk to third. The next at-bat coach Kevin Anderson made the call to bring in Connor Houser as the pinch hitter. This decision paid off as Houser tied the game with a double to left center, scoring Falk.
  • Bridgewater decided to load the bases with an intentional walk to Ritter and put Padilla at the plate. Padilla grounded out for the second out in the inning, but scored Madagan, for the 6-5 SU lead.
  • In the final two innings, Mitchell allowed just one hit to the Eagles and punched out two batters. The latter of his final strikeouts came for the 27th out of the ballgame, sending the Hornets home with the win.
