SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team fell to Susquehanna 3-2 Saturday afternoon on the road. Playing with 10 men, the Hornets (4-2-1) got two goals from
Nathan Yared late in the second half, but Shenandoah could not get the tying goal and fell to the River Hawks. Both teams were equal in total shots with the River Hawks having the edge 12-11, but Shenandoah did have the advantage on shots on goal (9-5) and corner kicks (9-6). Coming off the bench, Yared led the Hornets with three shots, all of which were on frame.
Chinedu Ikem and
Xavier Thompson were the other Hornets that had multiple shots, each with two.
Nathan Lynch got the start in net for Shenandoah and made two saves while allowing the three goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Connor Robles had the first shot of the game for both teams two minutes into the game, but his shot was saved by the River Hawks' keeper.
Carson Brooks stepped up to blast a shot for the Hornets, but that shot was also saved. Then there was a switch in momentum, and the River Hawks on their first offensive possession, came down in the 16
th minute and took an early 1-0 lead. Susquehanna continued to send shots towards the goal, and
Nathan Lynch made two saves to keep the deficit to only one goal. Susquehanna kept the Hornets out of their defensive third for twenty minutes, until
Hatim Elkhasouani and
Chinedu Ikem both fired shots just off target. The Hornets faced adversity after receiving a red card, forcing Shenandoah to play with only 10 men the rest of the half, and the game. No further damage was done, and the Hornets went into the break, still down 1-0.
In the second, the River Hawks picked up where they left off, firing two quick shots early in the period. In the 62
nd minute, Susquehanna took a 2-0 lead but then the
Nathan Yared showed why he earned a spot on the All-ODAC First Team last season. First,
Tarick Kamara and Ikem fired shots that were saved before Yared took a pass from
Alex Stetz to cut the lead in half in the 84
th minute. The Hornets could not hold the deficit as Susquehanna quickly got that goal back in the 86
th minute to push it back to a two-goal lead, but after two shots from
Xavier Thompson, one that was saved by the keeper and one a team save, Yared was there to clean it up scoring the Hornets second goal in the 88
th minute. However, it was too late as the final 90 seconds ticked off the clock and Shenandoah lost 3-2.
UP NEXT
The Hornets continue their road trip on Wednesday evening when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a match-up with the Nittany Lions, that game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.
