Morrison's Brace Secures Win in Double Overtime

WINCHESTER, Va. – The #20 Shenandoah University field hockey team won a thrilling game in double overtime over Gettysburg to remain undefeated at home on the young season.  The Hornets (2-1) got two goals from Cassidy Morrison, with the final goal coming with 1:26 left on the clock in the second overtime period, to secure the 2-1 win over the Bullets.  Morrison, who has been the lone goal scorer for the Hornets scored in 2nd quarter and then again in the second overtime period.  Both of Morrison's goals came off assists from Elizabeth RanbergerTaylor Swann started in goal and picked up the win making 10 saves, with three saves coming in double overtime.  The Hornets out shot the Bullets 26-19 and had the slight edge in corners 7-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Hornets got the first shot of the game when Elizabeth Ranberger fired a shot that Bullet goalie saved keeping the game scoreless.  With nothing else happening in the first, the Hornets and Swann were not tested as the only shot sailed wide of the goal.  A late foul in the first put Gettysburg on a power play, but the Hornets were able to kill the penalty and keep the game tied at zero.

In the second quarter, the Hornets picked up the pressure earning a penalty corner and then firing two shots that were blocked, before a shot from Ranberger was saved.  On the second penalty corner of the quarter, the Hornets connected for the first goal of the game.  Madison Short started the play getting the ball to Ranberger who found Cassidy Morrison for her fifth goal of the season.  Taylor Swann made a save on a breakaway, stopping Gettysburg on their best scoring opportunity of the game.  The Hornets got off three more shots in the half, but were not able to figure out the goalie.  Gettysburg then started to switch the momentum and fired four shots with a penalty stroke but Swann kept the Bullets off the board and the Hornets took a 1-0 lead inot the break.

With the momentum shifting toward Gettysburg, the Bullets wasted no time in the second half scoring less than two minutes into the period to tie the game at 1 all.  Gettysburg had a chance late in the third to take the lead when Swann made three consecutive saves with only 20 seconds left in the period.  In the fourth, the momentum switched back to the Hornets as on multiple occasions, the Hornets had a clear path to goal and made the centering pass, but Shenandoah could not get a stick on the ball for the go ahead goal.  Shenandoah survived a penalty corner with under a minute to go in regulation, but a late green card gave the Bullets another power play to end regulation and to start overtime.

It was all Shenandoah in the first overtime period with the Hornets getting nine shots off.  There was a moment that looked like the Hornets scored the winning goal, but the referee called a penalty corner and the Hornets could not capitalize and the game went to the double overtime.  In the second extra time, it was Gettysburg's time to attack forcing Swann to make three saves and keep the game tied.  As the clock was winding down, and penalty strokes looming, Cassidy Morrison picked up her second goal of the game to secure the 2-1 win.
