WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team drew to a 0-0 tie with Penn State Abington Saturday afternoon on Glo Fiber Field at Shentel Stadium. The Hornets (2-1-1) dominated possession, shots, and corner kicks but could not figure out the keeper and ended up a scoreless tie.
Gianncarlo Alderetes started in goal today and made one save and was not tested as the Hornets controlled the ball.
Jarbin Rodriguez took five shots to lead the Hornets with one of them on target.
Kyle Welch,
Nathan Yared, and
Jayden Dillard were the other Hornets with double-digit shot attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets wasted little time pressuring the Nittany Lions as
Nathan Yared got a shot on goal in the second minute earning the first corner for the Hornets. After the corner, Abington had their best chance with their only shot on goal that Alderetes saved with ease.
Jayden Dillard then fired a shot towards the net that goalie saved keeping the game scoreless in the fifth minute.
Chinedu Ikem had the only other shot for the Hornets in the first half, but he also could not find the back of the net and the Hornets went into the break tied at 0.
In the second half, the Hornets turned up the pressure as Welch and Rodriguez all fired shots within the first three minutes of the half. The Hornets kept the pressure up and the ball on the Penn State side of the field as the Nittany Lions didn't manage a shot until the 64
th minute of play, which was not on target and offered no threat. Before that Rodriguez,
Leandro Sainz, and Dillard all ripped shots that just missed as the game remained scoreless. The Hornets managed five more shots for the rest of the game, but still could not figure out the goalie. The Nittany Lions started an odd-man rush with about a minute left to play. The defense stole the ball and fired it up the field and the Hornets earned a corner kick with 30 seconds on the clock. The Hornets got the corner off as the clock ticked down, Dillard had a good look at a header that sailed wide and the clock expired in a 0-0 tie.
