LEXINGTON, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team experienced its second conference loss of the season, falling to #16/#20 Washington and Lee, 62-59. The Hornets (9-5, 5-2) were led by Terese Greene, who delivered an impressive performance with 23 points, narrowly missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Greene also contributed four steals and two assists. Maddie Kimble was the only other Hornet in double figures, scoring 13 points while adding five rebounds, one assist, two steals, and a blocked shot. Emily Williams chipped in with seven points and six rebounds, while Shawnise Campbell and Addisyn Banks each grabbed eight rebounds.
Despite out shooting the Generals from the field (37% to 31%), Shenandoah struggled from beyond the arc, going 4-for-19 compared to W&L's 8-for-25. The Generals also had a slight advantage at the free-throw line, shooting 10-for-14, while the Hornets went 9-for-16.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Emily Williams opened the scoring for the Hornets. The Generals responded with two free throws to tie the game. From there, Terese Greene and Maddie Kimble combined for the next 15 points, propelling Shenandoah to a commanding 17-6 lead. The Hornets held W&L to just three field goals (3-for-19) in the quarter, keeping the Generals scoreless from the floor until the four-minute mark.
Shenandoah extended its lead early in the second with a layup from Greene, followed by a three-pointer from Jessica Littlejohn to make it 22-8. Contributions from Shawnise Campbell, Littlejohn, and Gabby Krystofiak kept the Hornets ahead. However, W&L closed the quarter on a 13-2 run, cutting the deficit to 30-28 by halftime.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half before W&L took its first lead of the game with a three-pointer. Shenandoah quickly regained control after an Emily Williams layup, followed by a strong run led by Greene. A pair of layups from Campbell and Greene, a three-pointer from Greene, and two free throws pushed the Hornets' lead back to 10 points at 43-33. However, the Generals once again surged, ending the quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 47-45 lead into the final period.
Both teams exchanged free throws to start the fourth, tying the game at 49. Back-to-back three-pointers from W&L gave the Generals a six-point advantage with less than six minutes to play. Shenandoah battled back, with a layup from Greene, a free throw from Littlejohn, and a basket from Williams cutting the deficit to one. Littlejohn's jumper briefly gave the Hornets the lead, but W&L responded with a game-tying basket and a late three-pointer to secure the win. Down three in the final seconds, Greene had a clean look at a potential game-tying shot, but the attempt fell short, allowing the Generals to hold on for a 62-59 victory.
