WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team secured a thrilling 50-48 victory over Lynchburg in the "Battle of the Hornets" Saturday afternoon at the Wilkins Athletics and Events Center.
The Hornets (10-5, 6-2 ODAC) were led by standout performances from Terese Greene and Shawnise Campbell, who each recorded a game-high 16 points. Greene tallied her first double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds alongside five assists and a steal. Campbell dominated in the paint with an efficient 8-of-14 shooting performance, contributing eight rebounds, one blocked shot, and a steal.
Emily Williams also made significant contributions, scoring eight points on 4-of-6 shooting and pulling down 10 boards. Despite being held scoreless from beyond the arc for the first time this season (0-of-16), Shenandoah managed to edge out Lynchburg, who went 6-of-23 from three-point range. The Hornets shot 22-of-63 (34.9%) from the floor compared to Lynchburg's 21-of-59 (35.6%), and Shenandoah capitalized on six of 11 free-throw attempts, while Lynchburg missed all three of their free-throw opportunities.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game began with both teams struggling to score until Emily Williams broke the ice for Shenandoah with a steal and a coast-to-coast layup 90 seconds into the game. Terese Greene quickly took over, scoring back-to-back layups and converting an and-one to give the Hornets a 9-5 lead. Greene's free throw and additional baskets helped Shenandoah maintain a 14-11 advantage heading into the second quarter.
In the second, Shawnise Campbell established her presence in the paint, scoring immediately off an assist from Greene. Although Lynchburg briefly took a 19-18 lead three minutes into the quarter, Campbell quickly regained the edge for Shenandoah. Emily Williams followed with a key basket after a steal, giving the Hornets momentum as the teams traded scores. Campbell's final basket of the half secured a 28-25 lead for Shenandoah heading into the break.
The Hornets came out strong in the third quarter, with Campbell scoring consecutive put backs to extend the lead to 32-25. Lynchburg answered with a 4-0 run but was countered by a 6-0 Shenandoah spurt, including baskets from Williams, Campbell, and Maddie Kimble. Lynchburg fought back to close the quarter with a 7-4 run, but Shenandoah maintained a 42-37 lead heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Hornets struggled offensively, shooting just 3-of-14 from the floor. Greene scored two baskets, and Kimble added another, while free throws by Addisyn Banks and Kimble kept Shenandoah narrowly ahead. With Shenandoah up 49-45, Lynchburg hit a clutch three-pointer to cut the lead to one with 38 seconds remaining. After a Shenandoah shot clock violation, Lynchburg called a timeout to set up a final play but turned the ball over on the inbound pass.
Kimble was fouled and split a pair of free throws, giving Shenandoah a two-point lead. Lynchburg's Kate Littlejohn attempted a game-winning three at the buzzer, but her shot missed the mark, securing the Hornets' 50-48 victory.
