WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team came up just short in a tightly contested Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match up against Randolph-Macon on Wednesday night, falling 60–55. The Hornets (10–6, 6–3 ODAC) were once again led by senior Terese Greene, who paced all scorers with 22 points. Greene went 7-of-19 from the field, 2-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 6-of-10 at the free-throw line. She also contributed seven rebounds and two assists in the effort.
Greene was the only Hornet to reach double digits, while Shawnise Campbell provided valuable support with eight points on 3-of-8 shooting, 2-of-2 from the line, and a team-high nine rebounds. Maddie Kimble and Emily Williams added seven points each. Kimble shot 3-of-12 from the field, 1-of-4 from the charity stripe, and contributed three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Williams was a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor, including 1-of-1 from long range, while also grabbing five boards, recording two assists, and notching a block and a steal.
As a team, Shenandoah shot 38% (20-of-53) from the field, 19% (4-of-21) from three-point range, and 55% (11-of-20) from the free-throw line. Randolph-Macon matched the Hornets at 38% shooting (21-of-55) from the floor but edged them at the line, converting 15-of-21 free throws (71%) compared to Shenandoah's 55%.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams started slowly, struggling to capitalize on early possessions. The Yellow Jackets were the first to strike, as Bella Bruce converted three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to give Randolph-Macon an early lead. The visitors followed with back-to-back baskets for a 7–0 advantage. Shenandoah responded with a three-pointer from Emily Williams off an assist from Campbell. Kimble then found Greene cutting to the basket for a layup, sparking a 6–0 run for the Hornets. Greene hit her first triple of the game to bring Shenandoah within one at 9–8, and after a series of exchanges, the Hornets tied the game at 10 with a jumper by Gabby Krystofiak. Shenandoah closed the first quarter on a 6–2 run to take a 16–12 lead.
In the second quarter, Addisyn Banks split a pair of free throws to extend Shenandoah's lead to 17–14. After two free throws by Randolph-Macon, Banks buried a three-pointer to push the margin to four. However, after Campbell's layup with 4:44 remaining in the half, the Hornets were held scoreless as Randolph-Macon ended the period on a 9–0 run, taking a 27–22 lead into the break.
The third quarter saw continued struggles for Shenandoah, as the team went just 3-of-9 from the field in the third. Eight of the Hornets' 14 points in the third came from the free-throw line, as they were unable to find their rhythm offensively.
In the final quarter, Randolph-Macon extended its lead to as many as 11 points, but the Hornets refused to back down. Greene hit an early three-pointer and followed with a layup. A block by Campbell set up a Kimble layup, cutting the deficit to 47–43. Although Shenandoah endured a four-minute field goal drought, Greene sank a pair of free throws, and Krystofiak knocked down a jumper to make it a five-point game with under four minutes to play. Campbell grabbed a defensive rebound and scored a layup to bring the Hornets within three. With 25 seconds left, a Randolph-Macon turnover gave Shenandoah an opportunity, and the Hornets converted a layup to close the gap to 56–55. However, the Yellow Jackets iced the game by hitting their final four free throws, securing the 60–55 victory.
