Football Dominates Guilford, 45-7

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Shenandoah University football team defeated Guilford College, 45-7, on Saturday afternoon in an ODAC road game.

The Hornets (4-1, 2-1 ODAC) held the Quakers (2-4, 1-3) scoreless for the first 47 minutes of the game and allowed seven points or fewer in a game for the second time this season.

RECAP

On the first offensive play of the day for Shenandoah, first-year quarterback Mekhi Brown completed a pass to Jalen Redfearn, with Redfearn breaking several tackles on his way to a 79-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, on the very first play, the Hornets broke free for another long touchdown, as Aidan McCloskey ran up the middle for a 60-yard score, putting Shenandoah up 14-0. The Tigers fumbled the ball on the ensuing kick return, with Jacob Marion recovering the fumble for SU. However, the Tigers caught a break, intercepting a pass from the Hornets on the very next play.

The Hornets' defense forced another punt, giving the ball back to the offense at their own 30-yard line. Shenandoah quickly flipped the field with a 40-yard rush by Bryce Buchanan. Five plays later, Jackson McFarland put SU ahead 21-0 on a one-yard jet sweep touch pass.

The Quakers then went three-and-out and were forced to punt once again. On the punt, returner Sean Perry picked up the bouncing ball and ran down the field for a 73-yard touchdown, tied for the fourth-longest punt return in program history. The Hornets' last punt return for a touchdown was scored in 2023 by Keyshawn Wilder.

Shenandoah received the ball to start the second half and were set up on the Quakers' five-yard line, thanks to a 57-yard reception by Roge't Walker, on the third play of the quarter. The very next play, Brown completed a pass to Carter Rodriguez for five yards, putting SU up by five scores.

Quarterback hurries by Devin Keasey and Drew Custer forced Guilford to another three-and-out. Shenandoah capitalized and went on a 10 play, 50 yard drive, capped off by an 18-yard touchdown reception by Christian Forrest.

A sack by Phoenix Andes-Stowell and Ryan Apietu set up another punt from the Quakers. Shenandoah carried its next possession over into the fourth quarter and made it 45-0 off a 22-yard field goal by Carson Gallant. Gallant went 5-5 on extra-points and converted his lone field goal of the day.

Guilford scored its only points of the day on the next drive but the Hornets held the ball for roughly eight more minutes in the game, capping off the ODAC win.

Brown went 14-20 behind center, passing for four touchdowns and 251 yards. Eli Fleming entered the game in the third quarter and completed six passes for 26 yards.

Buchanan and McCloskey each rushed for 70 yards, while fellow running back Redfearn led the team with 82 receiving yards. Caleb Weston, Walker, McFarland, and Rodriguez each had over 30 receiving yards.

Matt Conroy and Apietu tied for the team-high in tackles with 10 each, with Apietu racking up 3.5 tackles for loss. Keasey had one sack for 17 yards, while forcing a fumble, and having a pass breakup.
