Conroy Sets Program Career Tackles Record in Win Over Bridgewater

Hornets Win, 24-21

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team defeated Bridgewater College, 24-21, on Saturday afternoon at home in an ODAC game. Senior linebacker Matt Conroy, with 11 total tackles on the afternoon, broke the program's all-time record for career tackles, surpassing Ben Burgan's 352 mark.

The Hornets (3-1, 1-1 ODAC) had 416 yards on offense behind first-year quarterback Mekhi Brown, making his first start. The Eagles' (1-4, 1-2) offense had two turnovers in the contest and was stopped twice on fourth down conversions in the red zone.

RECAP

After electing to receive the opening kickoff, Bridgewater threw an interception on the seventh play of the game, with Ace Heinrichs picking off the pass off a Ryan Apeitu deflection. Mekhi Brown had 70 passing yards on the opening drive, including a 12-yard touchdown pass to TJ Henderson, putting SU up 7-0.

Following a Shenandoah fumble in the second quarter, the Eagles scored on a one-yard rush for their first points of the day. Devin Keasey blocked the extra-point attempt to keep the Hornets up by one.

Kicker Carson Gallant hit a 22-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the first half to extend SU's lead, 10-6.

Trailing by four in the third, Bridgewater ran 10 plays, setting up a fourth-and-goal play from the SU two-yard line. The Eagles looked to the open receiver on the left side of the field, but Phoenix Andes-Stowell got his hands up and deflected the pass, giving SU the ball.

Shenandoah was forced to punt on its ensuing drive, allowing BC another chance at taking the lead. However, the threat was neutralized as Sean Perry intercepted the ball at the 50. Seven plays later, on a fourth down from the BC one, Brown rushed into the endzone on an option play, making it 17-6.

Bridgewater scored a touchdown on a fake field goal and converted on a two-point conversion, bringing its deficit down to three with 3:39 remaining.

On a 3rd-and-8, in Eagles territory, running back Aidan McCloskey broke free for a 34-yard touchdown to push the Hornets' lead to double-digits. However, Bridgewater scored another touchdown with 58 seconds left to stay alive.

Bridgewater went for an onside kick, but the Hornets were able to recover the kick. The very next play, Brown sealed the win with a 38-yard rush, allowing SU to run down the clock.

Brown finished the day with 228 passing yards and a passing touchdown. The quarterback also added 45 yards on the ground, along with the rushing touchdown.

Nine different Hornets caught a pass, with Caleb Weston leading the way with three receptions for 42 yards.

Defensively, Andes-Stowell had two sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup. Conroy led the team with 11 tackles.
