Women's Basketball Overcomes Twenty Point Deficit in Upset Win Against No. 19 Catholic

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team began its 2025-26 season with an upset victory at home over No. 19 Catholic University of America Cardinals, 62-59, on Monday evening.

The Hornets (1-0) trailed by 20 points in the third quarter, but outscored the Cardinals (0-1), 25-9, in the fourth quarter, to complete the massive comeback.

RECAP

Catholic grew its lead to 11 points during the duration of the first quarter, holding Shenandoah to just two baskets, a pair of layups by Emily Williams and Skai Bayless.

Williams made a jumper in the second quarter to cut the deficit down to single digits, but a 9-0 run by the visitors extended their lead to 18 with three minutes left in the second. Four points by first-year Tristan Shavers helped the Hornets cut the deficit to 13 by halftime.

Shenandoah was held scoreless for the first three minutes of the second half, which allowed the Cardinals to gain a 20-point advantage. Late in the third quarter, Brynna Nesselrodt knocked down two threes and a mid-range shot for eight straight points, allowing SU to end the quarter on an 8-2 run.

With six minutes left in the game, SU still trailed by double digits until a Jessica Littlejohn jumper got the Hornets back within eight. Minutes later, Banks converted a huge and-one, allowing SU to only trail by four with four minutes left. Neither team scored for over a minute, which allowed Williams to make it a two-point game with a pair of free throws.

Still trailing by two, the Hornets missed a pair of shots from the charity stripe, which gave Catholic a chance to go back up by two scores with 1:52 left. Banks and the Hornets went down and hit a shot to cut the deficit in half. At the other end of the court, a big defensive stop by SU let Bayless drain a game-tying shot with 48 ticks left on the clock.

Shenandoah fouled Catholic on the next possession, sending the visitors to the line. Luckily for the Hornets, they only made one. Just 12 seconds later, the Hornets had their first lead of the night, 60-59, with a Williams' jumper. Williams hit two more free throws to push the lead to three.

Catholic called a timeout with 30 seconds remaining, setting up the final play. The Hornets' defense caused Catholic to scramble and chuck up a three, which missed the mark and gave SU the upset win.

Williams led the Hornets with a double-double, scoring a career-high 21 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Banks and Nesselrodt tied for 13 points.

Shenandoah went 8-12 from the field in the fourth quarter, while holding the visitors to 28.57% shooting during the same stretch.
