Hornets Advance to Championship Game in Dramatic Fashion

Field Hockey Defeats Washington & Lee in OT

WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 2 Shenandoah University field hockey team defeated No. 3 Washington and Lee University 4-3 in overtime in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Thursday night at home, advancing to the ODAC Championship for the third consecutive year.

The Generals (14-5) led 3-1 in the third quarter, but the Hornets (15-3) were able to tie the game with 11 seconds left, sending the semifinal contest into overtime. Just under three minutes into the overtime period, Reagan Flory scored the game-winner, setting up a meeting with the top-seeded University of Lynchburg on Saturday in the championship game.

RECAP

Just over eight minutes into the game, Cassidy Alexander made a stop for the Hornets, but the Generals maintained possession, scoring first in the semifinal game. Washington and Lee held the Hornets without a shot in the first half, helping them to a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

Early in the third quarter, the Generals doubled their lead, with the Hornets still sitting shotless. Later in the quarter, Shenandoah earned a penalty corner, with Madison Short taking the corner and finding Mallory Holup for the Hornets' first goal of the game. However, the Generals quickly scored again to regain a two-goal lead.

With 12 seconds left in the third, Shenandoah received a break with the Generals receiving a five-minute yellow card, leading to a penalty stroke. Short stepped up to take the stroke and converted on the attempt, bringing SU within one at the end of the third.

The teams battled in the fourth quarter, with each goalie coming up with a key save, keeping the 3-2 lead for Washington and Lee. With under 20 seconds left, Shenandoah caused a turnover, which led to Ellie Quinn getting the ball in the circle and firing a shot past the Generals, tying the game in dramatic fashion.

In overtime, coming off three straight penalty corner attempts, the ball ended up on the stick of Claudia Lenahan, who worked it over to Flory, and the first-year delivered the ball into the back of the net, capping off the come-from-behind victory.

Alexander ended the game with three saves for Shenandoah, while Short led the team with a goal and an assist.
