Men's Basketball Back in Win Column to Close Out 2025

Hornets Defeat SVU, 80-70

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak on Tuesday with an 80-70 non-conference home win over Southern Virginia University.

The Hornets (7-4) were aided by a 24-point, 13-rebound double-double by Dorian Davis, along with another 22 points from Ellis Wright. The victory also marked the sixth home win over the Knights (4-6) for SU.

RECAP

Five points to start the game by Davis gave SU the early advantage, but SVU responded with a 9-2 run to take the lead five minutes in. Shenandoah fought back to take a 14-9 lead off a three from Andrew Ford, but the Knights once again rallied, tying the game at 14.

With Shenandoah up 19-17, a layup by John Allen started a 10-0 run for the Hornets, with Allen scoring seven points during the streak. The Knights cut their deficit down to seven, but the Hornets' defense held their position and allowed only one basket in the final three and a half minutes, taking a 45-33 lead into the locker room.

SVU opened the second half with a three-pointer to get the deficit back down to single digits, but the Hornets' top scorers scored on the next three possessions to get the lead up to 15. However, the Knights would chip away at SU's lead to only trail by eight with 11:35 remaining.

With 6:36 remaining, Wright provided a monstrous second-chance dunk to give Shenandoah its 15-point lead back. Despite the lead, the Knights worked to only trail by five with just over two minutes remaining. Free throws by Matthew Simmons, Allen, and Davis allowed the Hornets to close out the game and win by double-digits.

Davis' 13 rebounds were a career-high for the senior and are the most by a Hornet this season. The guard is currently averaging 7.8 rebounds per game, leading the team.
