WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team opened its 2025 season with a 12-5 loss at home to the University of Mary Washington on Monday afternoon.
The Hornets (0-1) were led offensively by Jake Greene, who netted two goals. Additional goals came from Matt Daniel, Clark Harrity, and Sam Poster. Assists were credited to Greene, Dylan Foughty, and Cody Griffis.
In goal, Mark Isabelle recorded a game-high 16 saves. The Eagles controlled the faceoff circle with a 17-4 advantage and capitalized on one of their four extra-man opportunities, while the Hornets were unable to convert on their two attempts.
Defensively, Shenandoah forced 10 turnovers, with Jonathan Hammond leading the team with four, followed by Prince Ayivon with two. Isabelle also paced the Hornets with four ground balls, while Dylan Pencek, Caleb Kelley, and Daniel each secured three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mary Washington quickly established control in the faceoff circle, forcing Isabelle into action early. The Hornets' goalie responded with multiple saves before Shenandoah took its first shot of the game, as Jake Greene fired wide. The Eagles kept the pressure on, but Isabelle made his third save of the quarter to keep the game scoreless.
Shenandoah struck first when Harrity found the back of the net off a Greene assist with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter. The Hornets extended their lead to 2-0 after Matt Daniel scored his first goal of the season. However, a late turnover deep in Shenandoah territory allowed the Eagles to get on the board just before the end of the quarter.
The Hornets reclaimed a two-goal lead midway through the second quarter when Greene notched his first goal of the season to make it 3-1. However, Mary Washington responded with four unanswered goals to close out the half, taking a 5-3 lead into the break.
The Eagles extended their advantage in the third quarter, adding six more goals while holding Shenandoah to a single tally— a give-and-go play between Foughty and Poster. In the final frame, both teams scored once, with Greene adding his second goal of the game, but the Hornets were unable to mount a comeback.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah will travel for its first road contest of the season next week, facing Hood College in a non-conference matchup. The Hornets edged the Blazers 11-10 in last year's contest, holding off a late push from Hood. The rematch is set for next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
