Men's Basketball Takes Season Sweep Over Generals

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team earned its second win of the season over Washington and Lee University with a 77-70 decision at home on Saturday.

The Hornets (8-15, 3-11 ODAC) were led by three players with double-digit points and used a 14-point lead in the second to secure the victory over the Generals (6-17, 4-10).

RECAP

The Hornets forced turnovers on the Generals' first four possessions to take a 4-0 lead behind baskets from Joshua Stephen and Dorian Davis. Landon Russ and Davis hit threes for the Hornets' next two baskets to keep them up by four, following threes from WLU.

Jordan Durham came off the bench for SU and dropped five points almost immediately to keep them in front despite WLU scoring on a quick three and a layup. SU led 15-11 following the two ODAC teams combining for 13 points in a 70-second span.

Washington and Lee's leading scorer scored the next two baskets in the game to tie the contest at 15 but Shenandoah quickly responded with an 8-0 thanks to two WLU turnovers and three-pointers by Davis and Davion Roberts. The run helped SU stay ahead for the rest of the half and take a 32-23 lead into the locker room.

Shenandoah came out of the break and scored the first five points of the half to take its largest lead of the game, 37-23. The Generals failed to find any points for the first four and a half minutes of the second, which allowed SU to maintain the double-digit lead.

Davis made the only field goal for SU during a six-minute stretch which saw the visitors come back within six. Russ ended the poor shooting spell with a three and a fast break layup to get the momentum swinging back to the Hornets bench. Exactly halfway through the half, SU led by 13.

On back-to-back possessions, Roberts connected with the SU big men to get easy points in the paint, including a massive one-handed slam by Joseph Baldwin which kept SU up by double-digits.

Thankfully for SU, they had a 14-point cushion, because WLU came storming back with a 7-0 run which forced SU to call a timeout and regroup. Following the timeout, SU's lead continued to diminish as WLU only trailed by five, with just over a minute left. However, Davis' four free throws helped seal the victory for the Hornets.

This marks the first time that the Hornets have beaten the Generals twice in the same season, following the team's win down in Lexington at the start of February.

Davis led Shenandoah with 18 points while gathering eight rebounds. Baldwin finished his afternoon with nine rebounds and 12 points. Roberts facilitated the SU offense with six assists, which is tied for the team-high this year in a single game.
