Men's Basketball Dominates EMU for Back-to-Back ODAC Wins

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team won back-to-back ODAC games for the first time this season with a 74-59 at Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday night.

A 19-3 opening run for the Hornets (9-15, 4-11 ODAC) kick-started the win over the Royals (5-19, 2-13), capping off the season sweep over EMU. Joshua Stephen led the team with 18 points with Dorian Davis closely following with 17.

RECAP

The Hornets began the game going up 8-0 quickly with threes from Davis and Landon Russ and a dunk by Joseph Baldwin. Stephen strung together five consecutive points, including an and-one, to put SU ahead by 11 following EMU's first basket of the contest.

Shenandoah held EMU to just three made shots in the first 15 minutes of the game. Kendrick Robinson scored his first points of the evening and Stephen added a pair of free throws, helping SU take a 28-8 lead with just under five minutes left in the half.

The Royals tried to chip away at the deficit across the remainder of the first half but eight points in the paint had the Hornets leading by 21 at the break. The deficit forced the Royals to rely on the three ball in the first as the home team attempted nine shots from beyond the arc but was only able to make one.

Early in the second half, five points by Davis and a three by Stephen allowed Shenandoah to take a 28-point lead, its largest of the night. Over the next six minutes, the teams traded points with Shenandoah still up by over 25 points after a jumper by Stephen following an EMU turnover.

The Royals were able to get their deficit below 20 but SU's defense stayed strong and held the home team to zero points for three minutes. The strong defense allowed SU to go back up by 24 with a dunk from John Allen keeping the momentum on SU's side.

EMU made three late three-pointers which cut the deficit down to 13 with 37 seconds left but a late dunk by Ellis Wright capped off the 15-point victory.

The Hornets held the Royals starters to a combined 21 points while SU's starting five combined for 57 points. Wright led the SU bench with eight points, all coming in the second half.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah caps off the regular season with an ODAC home game against Bridgewater at 4:30 p.m. Despite the slow start in conference play, a win on Saturday, plus help from other ODAC action over the weekend, can secure the eight-seed in the ODAC tournament for the Hornets.
