How It Happened
The Maroons took an early 2-0 lead before Emily Williams tied the game at 2-2 with the team's first basket two minutes into the game. Roanoke quickly responded with a three-pointer. Greene, the ODAC's leading scorer, got her first points of the game, but Roanoke went on a 5-0 run before Krystofiak ended the streak with a basket off an assist from Kimble. The Maroons continued to build their lead in the first quarter, but Krystofiak responded with a three-pointer and a layup following a midcourt steal by Kimble. However, Roanoke closed the quarter on a 5-0 run and led 23-15 after the first.
In the second quarter, Roanoke extended its lead to 10 points at 25-15 as the Hornets struggled from the field. Greene then scored four straight free throws and a layup, cutting the deficit to 25-21 with over six minutes remaining in the half. Every time the Hornets chipped away at the lead, Roanoke responded with another 5-0 run. In the final minutes of the quarter, outside of two layups from Campbell—including one off her own offensive rebound—and two free throws each from Bayless and Williams, Greene carried the Hornets with a pair of three-pointers, a layup, and a split pair of free throws. Despite her efforts, the Hornets trailed 43-38 at halftime after Roanoke hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer.
Early in the second half, both teams exchanged baskets, with Shepos converting an and-one to bring the Hornets within one possession at 45-43. The Maroons answered with a three-pointer to push their lead back to six, but Krystofiak's three-pointer tied the game at 48. Moments later, Kimble gave the Hornets their first lead of the night at 50-49 with under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. The teams continued to trade baskets for the rest of the period, with Roanoke holding a slim 61-60 advantage heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Hornets took control, outscoring Roanoke 20-5. The Maroons struggled offensively, shooting just 2-of-13 from the floor, while the Hornets shot 7-of-18. On Shenandoah's first offensive possession of the quarter, Kimble missed a shot, but Banks hustled, grabbed the offensive rebound, and scored, giving the Hornets a 62-61 lead—a lead they would not relinquish. Kimble then added another layup before Greene got back into the scoring column. With 5:05 left in the game, Kimble's jumper extended the lead to seven points, followed by a three-point play from Greene. Krystofiak drained a three-pointer from the wing, then added a layup before Kimble sealed the game with two free throws, securing the 80-66 victory.
