WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team wrapped up the Mr. V. Memorial Tournament against No. 15 Cortland, falling 15-6 in the final game of the weekend.
The Hornets (7-4) collected 12 hits on the day, with Cole Ambrosius and Jaime Padilla each recording two. Noah Cornwell delivered his third home run of the season and led the team with two RBIs. In addition to Cornwell's homer, Carl Keenan recorded the only other extra-base hit for the Hornets.
Anthony Arrichiello provided the longest pitching performance for Shenandoah, entering a tough situation with the bases loaded in the first inning. He went 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Michael Meyers led all Hornet pitchers with five strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Joe Gleason started on the mound for the Hornets, but for the second consecutive day, early pitching struggles plagued Shenandoah. Gleason recorded two outs in the first inning but surrendered five hits, walked two batters, hit another, and allowed seven runs before being relieved by Arrichiello. Arrichiello walked one and hit another before recording the final out.
The Hornets showed signs of life in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Brody Pickette singled up the middle, followed by a Christian Carver single through the left side. Carl Keenan then laced a double down the right-field line to score Pickette. Carver scored on a wild pitch, but the Red Dragons escaped the inning, stranding multiple Hornet base runners.
Arrichiello worked around a lead off walk and a hit batter in the third to keep it a 7-2 game. In the bottom of the inning, Shenandoah threatened again after Haden Madagan walked, Kyle Garrett singled, and Pickette walked to load the bases. However, Cortland escaped the jam without allowing a run.
The Red Dragons added another run in the fourth, taking advantage of an error and a single to extend their lead to 8-2. The Hornets continued to put runners on base, with Cornwell reaching on an error and Padilla singling, but they were unable to capitalize.
Meyers took over on the mound in the fifth and retired Cortland in order. He remained in for the sixth, where despite allowing two hits, he struck out the side.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ambrosius singled before Cornwell launched a towering home run down the right-field line, cutting the deficit to 8-4.
Meyers recorded the first out of the seventh on one pitch, but then allowed a single. The runner stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single up the middle. Meyers then struggled with command, throwing two wild pitches, walking another batter, and surrendering a single before being relieved by Brian Ferreira. Cortland capitalized, scoring four runs in the inning. The Red Dragons then added two more on a single to center and two defensive errors, though the Hornets managed to throw out a runner at the plate to prevent further damage.
Cortland tacked on another run in the eighth with back-to-back extra-base hits. Andrew Gload entered in relief, striking out the first batter he faced before inducing a double play, as Haden Madagan caught a fly ball and threw out a runner at home.
The Red Dragons added two more insurance runs in the ninth with a home run. Dominic Pancione then entered to record the final two outs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dillon Partin led off with a single to center. Kemper Omps reached on a fielder's choice, and a throwing error allowed Partin to stay on base. Dominic D'Ottavio followed with a single up the middle to load the bases. Daulton Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Partin and advancing Omps to third. Omps later scored on a wild pitch. Jonathan Stokely walked, and Harrison Madagan was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, but the Hornets managed only two runs before Cortland closed out the 15-6 victory.
