ASHLAND, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team hit the road Saturday afternoon for a conference matchup against Randolph-Macon. The Hornets (5-9, 2-5) dropped the contest to the host Yellow Jackets, 12-5.
Leading the way for Shenandoah was Jordan Rogers, who paced the Hornets with two goals. Jake Green, Dylan Taylor, and Sam Poster each added a goal, while Dylan Foughty, Hunter Snow, and Cody Griffis tallied assists. Jason Forchetti recorded a game-high seven ground balls, and Justin Lund, Jonathan Hammond, and Aaron Coombs each registered one caused turnover.
Shenandoah was dominant at the faceoff X, with Forchetti winning 15 of 21 attempts. Mark Isabelle got the start in goal and made a game-high 14 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Randolph-Macon got off to a fast start, winning the first two faceoffs and scoring on their opening two shots to take an early 2-0 lead. The Hornets responded five minutes later when Rogers found the back of the net off an assist from Snow, cutting the deficit in half. After a failed clear attempt, Randolph-Macon extended its lead to 3-1 and added another goal to make it 4-1. However, on the ensuing faceoff, Forchetti secured the ground ball and set up a play that saw Taylor score off an assist from Foughty, making it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Shenandoah opened the second quarter with momentum, as Green scored just seconds in to narrow the gap to 4-3. Randolph-Macon then took control, scoring four unanswered goals while holding the Hornets scoreless for the remainder of the half. Isabelle made several key saves, but SU trailed 8-3 at the break.
After halftime, the Hornets continued to struggle offensively. Despite quality looks from Taylor, Rogers, Poster, and Clark Harrity, SU was unable to find the net. Randolph-Macon added one goal in the third quarter to push the lead to 9-3.
In the fourth, Shenandoah came out aggressive with early shots from Harrity, Matt Daniel, and Griffis—all of which were stopped. After a caused turnover, Randolph-Macon capitalized to make it 10-3. Shenandoah fought back with goals from Poster (assisted by Griffis) and Rogers, who notched his second of the day, trimming the deficit to 10-5. However, the Yellow Jackets sealed the win with two late goals for a final score of 12-5.
