The score remained the same until a one-out double in the fifth put Averett ahead by four. Shenandoah picked up three hits through the first five innings but all three runners were left stranded.

Meghan Gaskins, who entered the game in the third inning, sat down the first two batters in the sixth inning, as SU trailed by four. With two outs, the inning was extended as Averett reached base on an error at first base. The error allowed the Cougars to add two runs on a pair of singles.
