GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team kept its ODAC playoff hopes alive with a thrilling come-from-behind victory on the road against Guilford, winning 9-8. The Hornets (6-10, 3-6) were led by Dylan Foughty, who recorded a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter. Bryan Berryhill added two goals, while Matt Daniel, Jason Forchetti, Cody Griffis, and Jake Green each contributed one. Luke Petrie paced the team with two assists, and Griffis added another.
The Hornets dominated the face off X, with Forchetti winning 17 of 20 opportunities and collecting a game-high nine ground balls. Josh Boonshaft led the team with two caused turnovers, including a clutch one late in the fourth quarter to halt a potential game-tying possession. Mark Isabelle earned the win in goal, making 10 saves—his final one coming with under 10 seconds left to secure the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Shenandoah won the opening face off, but Griffis' shot was saved. Guilford countered quickly, forcing a save from Isabelle, who kept the game scoreless early. Despite several solid looks from Green, Berryhill, Harrity, and Foughty, the Hornets couldn't break through. After drawing a penalty and getting multiple shots off on the extra-man opportunity, Shenandoah still couldn't find the net. Guilford capitalized with a transition goal to take a 1-0 lead. A failed clear and a shot clock violation led to a second Quakers goal, and another just before the end of the quarter made it 3-0.
In the second quarter, Shenandoah finally broke through. After a face off win by Forchetti, Foughty's shot went wide, but Petrie secured the ground ball, and Green scored his 16th goal of the season. On the next face off, Berryhill scored off a Petrie assist. After a shot clock violation by Guilford, Berryhill tied the game at 3-3 with his second of the game. The Quakers responded with a three-goal run to regain a 6-3 lead, but Forchetti answered by winning the next face off and scoring his second goal of the season. Daniel added an extra-man goal off a Griffis assist to pull within one, making it 6-5 at the half.
In the third, Shenandoah continued to apply pressure with shots from Boonshaft and Griffis. Green hit the post, and Guilford capitalized on a man-up opportunity to extend the lead to 7-5. Foughty answered with a goal, but Guilford scored again before the quarter ended to take an 8-6 lead.
The fourth quarter was all Hornets. Foughty scored five minutes in to make it 8-7, and after a Forchetti face off win, Griffis tied it at 8-8. Following a key save by Isabelle, Foughty completed his hat trick and gave Shenandoah a 9-8 lead. Isabelle came up big again down the stretch, and Boonshaft's caused turnover gave the Hornets possession with 90 seconds remaining. Though Guilford forced a turnover and called timeout to set up a final play, Isabelle made the last save of the game as time expired.
