Softball's Season Ends on Opening Day of ODAC Tournament

SALEM, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team's 2025 season has come to an end after being defeated by the University of Lynchburg and Averett University on Sunday in the opening weekend of the ODAC Tournament hosted at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.

The No. 5 Hornets (18-22) dropped the first game against No. 5 LYN (25-14), 11-5,  before nearly completing the comeback in a 13-12 loss in the nightcap against the No. 8 Cougars (18-24).

RECAP

With two outs in the first, Brenna Snyder started the scoring with a solo home run to right center. However, Lynchburg came right back and held a 5-1 lead at the end of the first after scoring on six hits, including two doubles. Lynchburg scored two more runs in the second on another double and a sacrifice fly.

Back-to-back singles by Allison McQueeney and Snyder put two on base for SU with just one out in the third. Makayla Cox scored both runners with a double to left field, cutting LYN's deficit down to four. Eliza Hunt, pinch running for Cox, scored on a single by Sarah Medellin to make it 7-4.

Lynchburg's lead jumped to 10-4 on a single with bases loaded, which brought in two runs, while another scored on an error by SU. LYN retired SU in order in three of the final four innings, with the teams trading runs in the fifth inning, for the 11-5 final in favor of Lynchburg.

RECAP

Through the two innings, Averett led 5-0. Shenandoah finally got on the board with an RBI single through the left side by Makayla Cox, scoring Brenna Westwood in the third. A double by Averett made it 6-1 in the middle of the fourth.

Kara Watkins started the bottom of the fourth with a single, which was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a single, putting runners on the corners. Westwood singled to plate Watkins, and directly after that, Allison McQueeney scored on a single by Brenna Snyder. Despite the two runs for the Hornets, Averett added on with a pair of their own for the 8-3 lead.

After retiring the Hornets in order in the fifth, Averett went on to score four runs, on two base hits, and an error in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Rachael Blumenschine reached with a one-out single and scored as pinch hitter Hannah Evans hit a two-run home run to center field. RBI singles by Cox and Sarah Medellin brought Shenandoah within five at the end of the inning.

Now trailing 13-7, Shenandoah entered the bottom of the seventh down to its final three outs, with the season on the line. The final frame began with four straight singles, loading the bases and scoring Danielle McNeill in the process. With bases loaded, Snyder stepped up to the plate and launched a grand slam to left field, cutting the deficit down to one with no outs.

Averett switched pitchers after the grand slam and worked around two singles by Shenandoah to close out the game and stay alive in the tournament.

This concludes the 2025 softball season for the Hornets. SU now waits to see the results of All-ODAC selections.
