Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Generals in ODAC Championship

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team was defeated, 14-6, at Washington and Lee on Sunday afternoon in the ODAC Championship in the team's first trip to the conference title game since 2013.

The Hornets (13-7) trailed the Generals (16-4) 6-4 at the half, but the top-seeded home team pulled away in the final 30 minutes, outscoring SU 8-2 to claim their 25th ODAC Championship. WLU claimed the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with the win.

RECAP

Shenandoah's all-time leader in draw controls, Ainsley Buckner, won the opening draw control of the championship for the Hornets, but WLU gained possession moments later and fired the game's first shot wide of the net. With the shot going wide, SU was able to get a good clear which allowed Alex Ripkin to score the first goal of the game, putting the Hornets up 1-0.

The Generals then got a man-up advantage, but the Hornets successfully killed off the penalty. However, WLU gained two free-position attempts, tying the game at one on the latter of the attempts. The Generals closed out the first quarter with three more goals, leading 4-1 after one.

To start the second, Washington and Lee picked up the first three shots, with two missing the net and one saved by Maddie Gaboury. The missed chances by Washington and Lee allowed Ripkin to strike for the second time and cut the deficit down to two.

The Generals came back with two goals of their own, taking a 6-2 advantage. Late in the quarter, Victoria Wunderlich caused a turnover, which led to Buckner scoring for Shenandoah. Just over 90 seconds later, Buckner gained a free-position attempt and made the most of it, bringing SU within two heading into halftime.

WLU entered the third quarter and scored 25 seconds into the frame. The now three-goal lead dwindled back to two as Ayla Jantz buried a free-position attempt for the Hornets. Washington and Lee won all six draw controls in the quarter to keep possession for the majority of the frame, helping them take a 10-5 lead into the fourth.

The home team added four more goals in the final quarter before Ripkin capped off her hat trick with six seconds remaining.

Gaboury made five of her nine saves in the second half as Washington and Lee outshot Shenandoah 18-9 during that stretch.

Senior Julianna Fohner led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers with four and two, respectively. Jaelyn Hawes led the team with four draw controls.

Buckner, Fohner, and Talia Maria were named to the All-Tournament team. In two tournament games, Buckner scored four goals and had 12 draw controls. Fohner collected seven ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Maria had five ground balls, one caused turnover, and a draw control.
