FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Shenandoah University field hockey kept its unbeaten record alive in dramatic fashion Saturday, rallying from a two-goal deficit to stun Mary Washington, 4-2, at Battleground Turf.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets (5-0) trailed 2-0 midway through the second period after UMW's Mackenzie Proffitt scored twice in the opening 25 minutes, both assisted by Katie Royle. Shenandoah didn't panic, and its persistence paid off in a stunning offensive flurry.
In a span of just 95 seconds late in the third period, the Hornets flipped the game completely.
After weathering heavy pressure from Mary Washington in the fourth period—including 12 shots and eight corners—the Hornets sealed the win when Lenahan finished a chance in the second overtime at 59:00 to make it 4-2.
Goalkeeper Cassidy Alexander stood tall in the cage with four saves, all coming in the final period to preserve the lead. Lenahan, Flory, Holup, and Vodvarka each tallied goals, while Short and Lenahan added assists.
Mary Washington (2-2) outshot Shenandoah 17-13 and held a 15-10 edge in corners, but the Hornets' efficiency in front of goal proved decisive. Proffitt accounted for both Eagle goals, giving her five on the season.
The win keeps Shenandoah unbeaten through five games, building momentum as they head into midweek action.
