Football Defeats Geneva in First Meeting Between Programs

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - The Shenandoah University football team snuck past Geneva College, 29-28, on Saturday night on the road in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Carson Gallant's field goal with 5:30 left in the game lifted the Hornets (2-0) to victory over the Golden Tornadoes (0-2). Quarterbacks Jack Pearson and Mason Anderson combined for 376 passing yards and three touchdown passes in the victory.

RECAP

For the second straight week, Shenandoah scored its first points of the game with a safety in the first quarter. On the next drive for SU, a 27-yard reception by Caleb Weston helped set up a 33-yard field goal by Gallant, putting SU ahead 5-0 early in the first.

Following a three-and-out by Geneva, the Hornets' offense came back out to the field and completed a five-play drive, which ended in Pearson finding Weston for a 24-yard touchdown. Shenandoah led 12-0 at the end of the first.

The Golden Tornadoes held the ball for over eight minutes in the second quarter, scoring 14 unanswered points, holding a two-point lead at the half. Kamran Mosley interrupted the home team's second-quarter success with an interception deep in Geneva territory.

Geneva's defense started the second half with a 41-yard, pick-six on the first play from scrimmage to take a 21-12 lead. The Hornets responded late in the third as Anderson connected with Carter Rodriguez for a 26-yard score, putting the Hornets back within two. However, Geneva automatically regained a nine-point lead on their first play of the next drive with a 69-yard passing touchdown.

The fourth quarter started in favor of the Hornets as Roge't Walker recovered a muffed punt at the Geneva 18-yard line. Two plays later for SU, Christian Forrest caught an 18-yard touchdown.

With SU down by two, linebacker Jake Jack forced a fumble, which was recovered by Connor Moyssisadis at the Hornets' 21-yard line. On Shenandoah's next drive, Weston collected 30 more receiving yards, which helped set up Gallant's 27-yard field goal, which gave the Hornets a 29-28 lead.

Two penalties on Geneva's final drive put them in a 4th-and-25 situation, needing to grab the first. On the long conversion attempt, Sean Perry broke up the pass, giving the ball back to the Hornets and securing the win.

Running back Jalen Redfearn rushed for 102 yards, while Weston earned 135 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Defensively, the Hornets were led by Matt Conroy's 17 tackles. Ryan Wilson and Ryan Apietu teamed up for the team's only sack of the evening.
