Football Falls to (RV) Hampden-Sydney in ODAC Opener

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team began its 2025 conference slate with a 42-7 loss at (RV) Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers (3-0, 1-0 ODAC)  rushed for 448 yards with two 100-yard rushers against the Hornets (2-1, 0-1). Linebacker Matt Conroy now sits 11 tackles away from breaking SU's all-time career total tackles record after a 22-tackle performance this afternoon.

RECAP

The Tigers began their scoring with a 13-play, 85-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard rushing touchdown. Shenandoah's offense was forced to three three-and-outs in the first quarter, which allowed Hampden-Sydney to score two more touchdowns and hold a 21-0 lead at the end of the first.

On the Tigers' first drive of the second Conroy found himself his fifth career interception, which put SU's offense at the HSC three-yard line after a 17-yard return by the linebacker. Three plays later, Jalen Redfearn reached the endzone on a one-yard rush for his first touchdown of the season, making it 21-7.

On the very next drive, Ace Heinrichs intercepted another pass for the SU defense, giving the Hornets a chance to cut into their deficit. However, Hampden-Sydney's defense came up with an interception of its own on the ensuing SU drive. The Interception allowed for the Tigers to score another touchdown right before the half.

Hampden-Sydney scored a touchdown in each of the final two quarters and had possession of the ball for 19:47 of the second half. The Tigers had the ball for over 37 minutes throughout the entire game.

SU's run game gained 101 total yards, with Redfearn leading the way with 79. Roge't Walker led the receivers with three catches for 27 yards.

Sean Perry ran back five kicks for 153 yards, which is tied for the ninth-best performance in all of Division III football for the season. Perry returned his final kick of the day for 75 yards, which is the longest return by a Hornet since 2015.

Punter Connor Moyssiadis punted five times today, landing three inside the Tigers' 15, and had three punts travel over 50 yards.
