WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team battled through a back-and-forth contest and came away with a dramatic 3-2 double-overtime victory over Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Aikens Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets (2-0) struck early, as Ellie Quinn converted in the 9th minute off a feed from Reagan Flory. Shenandoah doubled its advantage midway through the second quarter when Kierney Weigle buried a setup from Claudia Lenahan, sending the home side into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Washington College (0-2) clawed its way back into the game behind standout forward Emma Campbell. The junior forward scored unassisted just three minutes into the third quarter, then tied the contest with a goal in the 57th minute, finishing off a pass from MaryCate Anson to force overtime.
Both teams had chances in the extra sessions, but it was Shenandoah who broke through in the waning moments. With just 28 seconds left in double overtime, Camryn DeLeva found the back of the cage off another assist from Lenahan to deliver the golden goal and seal the Hornets' win.
Shenandoah held a 17-13 advantage in shots and earned 10 penalty corners compared to the Shorewomen's 4. Cassidy Alexander anchored the Hornets' defense with six saves in goal, while Washington keeper Charlotte Schurman was outstanding with nine saves in the loss.
Campbell led Washington College with both goals, while Lenahan paced Shenandoah with two assists and four shots on target.
