Women's Basketball Falls to Guilford in Overtime Clash

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team went to overtime for the first time in two seasons in a road ODAC loss at Guilford College, falling 80-75 on Friday evening.

Emily Williams sent the game to overtime for the Hornets (14-5, 6-4 ODAC), tying the game at 71, but the Quakers (16-3, 7-3) scored the first five points of the extra period, which was the difference in the game. Williams and Addisyn Banks each notched a double-double for SU.

RECAP

Williams scored the first six points of the game off assists from Skai Bayless and Banks, putting SU up just 90 seconds in. Guilford answered back to tie the game at six, but SU regained the lead as Banks scored nine of the next 11 points for the Hornets.

A second-chance jumper by Jessica Littlejohn pushed SU's lead to six with under two minutes remaining in the opening frame, but by the end of the quarter, SU's lead was back to one possession.

Shenandoah's defense held Guilford to two points across the first seven minutes of the second, aided by a steal by Lily Berger and a block by Tristian Shavers. While the Quakers struggled to score, Brynna Nesselrodt hit back-to-back three-pointers, helping SU extend its lead to 13, 31-18.

An 8-2 run by Guilford ended the first half to cut its deficit down to seven at halftime. SU's lead continued to trim at the beginning of the third quarter, leading to Guilford grabbing a four-point lead. With under four to play in the third, Banks converted a free throw to tie the contest up at 43 and gave the lead back to SU with a layup.

Guilford rallied with five straight points to flip the lead back in its favor. Anaya Wilson connected with Littlejohn for a three-pointer to tie the game back up, but it was the Quakers who led entering the fourth, 52-50.

Nesselrodt and Williams scored for SU for another lead change, but Guilford once again led after a pair of layups. After Banks forced another tie, Guilford extended its lead to six with under three minutes left in regulation.

Banks added six points for SU during a late 6-1 run, which cut Guilford's lead to one with under 30 seconds remaining. With the shot clock off, the Hornets were forced to foul, sending Guilford to the line. SU caught a break as Guilford only made one of the free throws, allowing Williams to go down and make two of her own to send the game to OT tied at 71.

In overtime, Guilford held Shenandoah scoreless for the first 4:30 of the period, until Bayless hit a jumper to cut SU's deficit to three. However, Guilford kept the lead out of reach with four free throws to secure the win.

Banks scored 27 points and collected 11 rebounds, both team-highs. Williams added 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Nesselrodt joined the duo with 10 rebounds of her own.

Shenandoah had 24 assists as a team, which is tied for fifth most all-time for the program (since 2009), led by five from Banks and Williams.
