Nesselrodt Scores Career High in Women's Basketball Midweek Win

Hornets Defeat Marlins in ODAC Play

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan University for the second time this season with a 67-60 win in ODAC play at home on Wednesday night.

The Hornets (15-5, 7-4 ODAC) won the first meeting on a last-second shot but beat the Marlins (11-9, 5-6) this go around thanks to a double-digit lead heading into the fourth quarter and a team-high 22 points from Brynna Nesselrodt.

RECAP

Nesselrodt scored the first bucket of the night with her first of five three-pointers to put SU up 4-0 off an assist from Skai Bayless. VWU then went on an 8-0 run for its only lead of the night. Another shot from downtown by Nesselrodt and a fastbreak layup by Jessica Littlejohn handed the lead right back to the Hornets.

The Marlins kept their deficit to one possession in the final minutes of the opening frame, with the Hornets leading 15-12 at the end of one. In the early portion of the second, Addisyn Banks and Nesselrodt combined for 12 points on a 12-2 run that pushed SU's lead to 13. Role players Mya Martin and Lily Berger chipped in on SU's scoring to give the Hornets a 35-24 halftime advantage.

Shenandoah was held scoreless for the first three minutes of the second half, allowing VWU to cut its deficit to six. Banks and Nesselrodt ended the drought for the Hornets to get the lead back to double-digits halfway through the quarter. The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter with SU leading 52-42.

Across the first few minutes of the fourth, the Marlins chipped away at the Hornets' lead and only trailed by four with 5:53 remaining. Emily Williams made a shot in the paint and immediately stole the ball back for the Hornets, which led to a quick bucket by Bayless to get the lead up to eight. A steal by Banks and five more points from Nesselrodt helped the Horents close out the win and snap a three-game skid.

Banks contributed 17 points in the game for SU, with Bayless adding 12 points while playing a team-high 34 minutes.

Defensively, the Hornets had 11 steals, led by Banks' six. Williams had four steals and led the team with seven rebounds.
