Men's Basketball Outcome by Late by Tigers

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team lost 73-64 on the road in an ODAC game to Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (11-10, 4-8 ODAC) only trailed by three with under four minutes remaining in the game, but an 8-0 run by the Tigers (13-8, 7-5) helped them pull away by double-digits to guarantee the win.

RECAP

Hampden-Sydney grabbed the lead first, but the Hornets were able to tie the game four times across the first five minutes with points from Dorian Davis, Ellis Wright, and John Allen. Shenandoah was able to capture a 12-9 lead off a three-pointer from Davis with 13:41 remaining.

Matthew Simmons and Allen pushed the SU lead to six halfway through the first half; however, a 15-2 run by the Tigers gave them a seven-point lead with 5:35 remaining. Three-pointers by Wright and Davis allowed the Hornets to regain the lead, 31-30. Despite the SU lead, HSC quickly responded and flipped the lead back to its favor, taking a 37-34 halftime lead.

Hampden-Sydney held SU to just two points for the first five minutes as the Tigers extended their lead to nine. Consecutive threes from Wright and Landon Russ cut the deficit to three for the Hornets, before Wright added a layup minutes later to make it a one-point game.

Leading by one, the Tigers took their lead back to six with eight minutes left. For the Hornets, Wright and Davis helped them keep the deficit at one possession with 3:43 remaining. However, that's where the Tigers would go on that previously mentioned 8-0 run to take a 69-58 lead. Allen and Davis scored during the final 1:40 for SU, but the 11-point lead by the Tigers was too much to overcome for SU.

Wright led Shenandoah with 23 points and two blocks, while Davis gathered a team-high six rebounds and added 19 points.
