Baseball Wins Series Opener at VWU

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 11 Shenandoah University baseball program scored six runs in the final two innings to help lift them to a 9-2 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday in game one of a two-game ODAC series.

The Hornets (15-2, 2-2 ODAC) were led by multi-hit days by Carl Keenan, Dillon Mauzy, and JP Williams, while holding the Marlins (10-5, 2-1) to zero runs in eight of the nine innings.

RECAP

Blaine Griffin (5-0) allowed zero hits through the first 2.2 innings, until the Marlins strung together two consecutive two-out hits in the third. A walk by Griffin then loaded the bases. While it looked like the Marlins would score first, Griffin got out of the inning with no runs allowed thanks to a pop-up to second.

The fourth began with a JP Williams double, before he scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from Christian Carver later in the frame. With the bases still loaded, the Hornets extended their lead to 3-0 on an error by the Marlins on an attempt to turn a double play.

Neither team scored until Virginia Wesleyan added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and an error by Shenandoah, cutting the SU lead down to one, 3-2.

The Hornets rebounded and added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, including an RBI double to left center by Carl Keenan.

SU then extended its lead to 9-2 in the top half of the ninth. Tyler Smith and Williams both singled, with Williams scoring Jaime Padilla on his single. The bases were then loaded after the Marlins intentionally walked Anthony Arrichiello. Matthew Atchley and Samuel Vandrey each earned free passes to drive in the next two runs of the inning. The final run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly by Keenan.

Liam Stewart earned his second save of the season. Stewart pitched the final three innings and allowed just one hit.
