Big Innings Lead No. 7 Baseball Past Alvernia

WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 7 Shenandoah University baseball program defeated Alvernia University 16-3 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Hornets (19-3) scored eight runs in the eighth inning to complete the run-rule win, capped off by a Samuel Vandrey grand slam. Additionally, the Hornets turned a triple play on the Golden Wolves (7-8) in the third inning, just the third triple play in Division III this season.

RECAP

A double play turned by the Hornets' defense in the second inning kept the game scoreless, allowing them to take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Jaime Padilla. Carl Keenan and JP Williams drove in a combined three runs over the next two at-bats. With Williams on first, Tyler Smith made it a 6-0 game with a two-run home run to right center. All six runs in the second came with two outs.

After Christian Carver, Keenan, Smith, and Dillon Mauzy helped turn the triple play in the third, Adham Sahebzadah hit a 398' home run to center field, putting the Hornets up seven.

A two-run home run in the fifth put the Golden Wolves' first runs of the day on the board, while Smith added another RBI for the Hornets to make it 8-2 for SU in the sixth. Alvernia converted a one-out double in the top of the eighth to cut its deficit to five.

In the home half of the eighth, Keenan, Smith, and Williams loaded the bases to start the frame. Mauzy walked in the first run of the inning, while Kyle Garrett followed it up with an RBI infield single for SU's tenth run of the afternoon.

Sahebzadah and Kemper Omps continued to move SU runners station-to-station in the eighth with RBI walks. This kept the bases loaded and led to Samuel Vandrey hitting the game-ending grand slam on a full count.

Nick Bell (2-0), Jacob Hnath, Dominic D'Ottavio, Jake Holbert, and Logan Pilon each saw time on the mound for the Hornets, with Bell getting the win and start.
