Padilla's Grand Slam Lifts No. 6 Baseball to Win Over (RV) Lions

WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 6 Shenandoah University baseball program rebounded from a conference loss with a 9-4 non-conference win against (RV) Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon at home.

With the game tied at four in the sixth, Jaime Padilla hit a go-ahead grand slam to lift the Hornets (20-4) past the Lions (13-8).

RECAP

On the first pitch the Hornets saw, Jaime Padilla lifted a single into right field to get the leadoff runner on in the first. Kyle Garrett reached on a walk before the two baserunners executed a double steal. Padilla came around to score on an RBI groundout by JP Williams, which gave SU the early 1-0 lead.

Michael Meyers got the start on the mound for the Hornets and held the Lions scoreless for the first 4.2 innings of the game, but an error kept the fifth inning alive for the visitors, leading to them plating two runs for a 2-1 lead. Meyers finished the day with 4.2 innings pitched, five strikeouts, one walk, and zero earned runs.

A two-run home run in the top of the sixth extended the Lions' lead to 4-1.

Carl Keenan led off the bottom of the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a groundout, Tyler Smith and Dillon Mauzy both reached base on two separate fielding errors that kept the inning going and scored Keenan. Tyler Smith scored on an RBI single from Cole Ambrosius, cutting the SU deficit to one. The very next batter, Adham Sahebzadah, tied the game up with an RBI single up the middle.

Following Sahebzadah's hit, Christian Carver drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for SU with one out on the board. This brought Padilla up to the plate, and the senior launched a ball to deep center field that left the yard for a go-ahead grand slam, putting SU up 8-4.

The teams went scoreless in the seventh, and Liam Stewart pitched a perfect eighth inning, setting up a leadoff solo home run by Ambrosius in the bottom of the eighth, giving SU the 9-4 lead.

Stewart returned to pitch the ninth inning and worked around a two-out single to get the final outs on the board for the Hornets' victory.

Braden Landis (2-0) picked up the win on the mound, entering in the fifth and going 1.1 innings. Joey Mitchell pitched the seventh inning for SU and allowed one hit, one walk, and had two strikeouts.

Padilla and Ambrosius led the Hornets offensively with multi-hit, multi-RBI games. Ambrosius reached base all four times he stepped up to the plate. Sahebzadah joined the duo with a multi-hit day.
