Softball Swept by Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team lost its first ODAC game of the season in a sweep at Averett University on Saturday.

The Cougars (15-7, 2-2 ODAC) shutout the Hornets (15-5, 4-2) in game one, 2-0, before walking off game two in a 5-4 win.

GAME ONE RECAP

After erasing the Hornets on a double play in the top of the first, the Cougars turned around and scored in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly, after a single and walk started the inning.

Makayla Cox hit a leadoff double to start the second, but the Cougars worked around it and held the Hornets scoreless once again. This allowed the home team to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second after an error by SU helped them score.

Averett retired the Hornets in order in three of the final five innings as Brenna Westwood earned the final hit of the game for SU in the fifth.

Gracie Ravenkamp (7-1) pitched a complete game for the Hornets and didn't allow a run for the final five innings.

GAME TWO RECAP

After Averett gained a first-inning lead, Shenandoah responded in the second to take the lead. Brenna Westwood and Sarah Connel singled to get two runners on with one out for SU. Marisa Sawn then recorded an infield RBI single to plate Westwood, tying the game at one.

Kelly Hartman immediately had an infield RBI single of her own, scoring Connel, and giving the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Allison McQueeney drew a full count walk to load the bases, which allowed Cadence Rieg to drive in the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

A sacrifice fly by the Cougars in the bottom of the second cut their deficit to one.

In the fourth inning, McQueeney singled up the middle with two outs to continue the inning, before stealing second. With McQueeney on second, Rieg delivered an RBI double to double SU's lead, 4-2.

A throwing error in the bottom of the sixth allowed two runners to score and tie the game for Averett. The Cougars sat down the Hornets in order in the seventh, and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the home half to complete the sweep.
