Gaskins Throws No-Hitter as Hornets Sweep Day Three in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Shenandoah University softball team went 2-0 on day three of its trip to Florida with a pair of 4-0 wins over Wheaton College and Nebraska Wesleyan University on Monday, which included a solo no-hitter in game one.

Meghan Gaskins threw the complete game no-hitter to start the day for the Hornets (8-2), going seven innings with seven strikeouts in the win over the Thunder (0-1). SU then downed the Prairie Wolves in the second game behind two RBI from Cadence Rieg and a five-inning showing from Gracie Ravenkamp.

WHEATON COLLEGE RECAP

A stolen base by Allison McQueeney set up an RBI double off the bat of Keagan Cooper for SU's first run of the morning. Cooper then came around to score on an RBI groundout from Sarah Connell, to put SU up 2-0 entering the bottom of the first.

In the second, a two-out single by Payton Jensen, plus a stolen base, helped give Shenandoah a 3-0 lead as McQueeney added an RBI single. Jensen then gave SU a 4-0 lead in the fourth with a triple to right center, plating Maddie Esham.

Meghan Gaskins (2-0) retired the first 19 batters she faced in the game before allowing a base runner off a lead-off walk in the seventh. A foul out, a fly out, and a pop-up gave Gaskins the final three outs needed for the no-hitter.

Gaskins' no-no is the first for the Hornets since 2022 and the first shutout no-hitter since 2012.

NEBRASKA WESLEYAN RECAP
Two strikeouts by Gracie Ravenkamp (5-0) in the top of the first allowed the Hornets to strike first in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI groundout by Makayla Cox, scoring Cadence Rieg, after Rieg hit a one-out double.

In the third, Keagan Cooper hit a lead-off double, which allowed her to score on a two-out single by Maddie Esham, putting SU up 2-0.

Ravenkamp kept the no-hit streak going for the Hornets into the fourth inning.

Rieg added another two-out hit for the Hornets with a two-RBI single to center, which drove in Lu Cirillo and Paige Eagleton, completing SU's scoring for the day.

Ava Matthews entered the circle for the Hornets in the sixth inning and retired six of the seven batters she faced, including two strikeouts. Ravenkamp finished her afternoon with five strikeouts.

With a steal in the second inning, Allison McQueeney is now tied for the program's single-season steal record with 16. The Hornets are just 10 games into their season.
