Track and Field Wins Multiple Events at EMU's Invite

On the second day of a split-squad weekend for the Shenandoah University outdoor track and field programs, a group of Hornets traveled down to Eastern Mennonite University for the EMU Heritage Invitational, and the team also had one runner compete at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic.

EMU TRACK RECAP

The Hornets won four events on the track on Friday. The first victory came in the first event of the afternoon with the women's 4x100m relay team of Myah Powell-Utley, Ruth McGhee, Kaitlyn Loy, and Elaina Ramos running a 52.10.

Both the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams for the Hornets also won their respective events. The men's team of Wyatt Newcome, Kyle Corpin, Nathan Lee, and Roman Bernard finished at 3:31.00. Ramos, Loy, Grace Semow, and Amy Oleksy represented the women with a time of 4:18.86.

Ruth McGhee won the women's 200m for Shenandoah, running a personal best time of 25.55, which is the second-best mark all-time for SU.

Myah Powell-Utley moved into fifth in the program's record books for the women's 100m and 200m. Powell-Utley ran a 12.60 in the 100m and then a 26.19 in the 200m later in the day.

Sean Rosner placed fourth in the men's 100m and became eighth all-time for the Hornets with an 11.09 finish. Anthony McGhee also earned a PR in the event with a 12.36.

The SU men sent five Hornets to race in the 200m. Wyatt Newcome had the best finish of the group, placing second with a 22.66. Rosner (22.86), A. McGhee (24.93), and Jaidan Cameron (23.62) each earned personal bests, while Kowen Brassfield ran a 24.79. Cameron would go on to also earn a PR in the 400m with a finishing time of 53.99.

Jack Micco (2:15.91, 7th), Corey Christensen (2:16.34, 8th), John Buckley (2:19.53, 9th), and Jack Baker (2:27.51, 11th) each set PRs in the men's 800m. The four Hornets joined teammate Bryce Scholz for the men's 1,500m. 

Emily Bultema represented the Hornets in the women's 800m and 1,500m. The first-year ran a 2:42.92 for sixth in the 800m, before closing out her day with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500m at 5:20.64.

Emilie Gaudron (20:21.60, 3rd), Sarah Lane (20:56.37, 5th), Lauren Tooman (21:17.73, 6th), Arial Crawford (21:20.03, 7th), Cora Helman (21:32.83, 8th), Catherine Cottrill (22:28.69, 9th), and Rylee Miller (22:41.20, 10th) ran for the Hornets in the women's 5,000m. Lane and Cottrill set PRs in the race.

The men were represented by Sebastian Berrios (16:24.90, 2nd), Isaac Clarke (16:38.72, 4th), Brenden Maloy (16:47.67, 6th), Zack Hamacher (16:48.23, 7th), Ethan Beaugez (17:00.55, 8th), Caleb Beiswenger (17:20.49, 11th), Tyler Mullen (17:39.48, 12th), and Shane Lyons (17:59.61, 14th). Berrios, Clarke, Beaugez, and Maloy set PRs in the event.

EMU FIELD RECAP

Molly Donaldson won the women's shot put in the final event of the afternoon. The first-year threw a 12.11m, which was 0.01m off her PR. Donaldson also placed fourth in the discus with a personal best of 31.09m.

The Hornets also saw Jillian Taylor in the discus, placing sixth at 24.81m. Sophia Sharp had an eighth-place finish in the shot put at 7.62m.

Elaina Ramos won the women's long jump with a leap of 5.09m, which is the fourth-best all-time for SU. Kaitlyn Loy is now one spot behind Ramos in the record book after hitting 4.83m on Friday in the same event.

On the men's side of the field, Zachary Sheehan won the triple jump with a mark of 13.85m. In the long jump, Sheehan hit 6.60m, giving him third. His mark in the long jump is now second all-time for SU, and his triple jump performance sits third.

Mekhi Mims reached 1.85m in the high jump, placing him third at the event.

Grady Speer placed fourth in the discus and shot put, while setting PRs in both. The thrower hit a mark of 41.70m in the discus, which is now fifth all-time for SU. He is also now seventh for the Hornets in the shot put at 12.79m.

Luke Jacobs and Sawyer Paine competed in the same two events as Speer. Jacobs had marks of 35.06m and 10.26m in the discus and shot put, respectively. For Paine, he reached 25.52m in the discus while having a mark of 9.66m in the shot put.

DENNIS CRADDOCK RECAP

Makenna Thrush was the only SU athlete sent to the University of Lynchburg this week. The graduate student raced in the women's 5,000m and placed 17th with a time of 19:17.52.

The Hornets send a group to Bucknell University on Saturday for the Bison Outdoor Classic.
