Baseball Swept by Maroons on Senior Day

WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 4 Shenandoah University baseball program was swept by Roanoke College on Saturday at home in ODAC play on the team's senior day.

The Hornets (28-7, 11-6 ODAC) had the lead in both games, but the Maroons (20-15, 7-10) would go on to win game one 11-7 and game two 15-6.

GAME ONE RECAP

Dillon Mauzy was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the first, following a walk to Tyler Smith and a bunt by Carl Keenan. Then Cole Ambrosius drew a four-pitch walk to drive home Keenan for the game's first run.

Blaine Griffin (8-2) held the Maroons scoreless for the first four innings, but the visitors then exploded for a six-run fifth inning behind a lead-off home run and three more hits.

Trailing by five, the Hornets were able to cut their deficit to one by the end of the fifth. Greg Cunha doubled to left center and came around to score on a Jaime Padilla double. Three pitches later, Kyle Garrett doubled, making it 6-3. Keenan gave the team their fourth straight hit with a two-run shot to left field, making it 6-5.

However, the Maroons were able to extend their lead to 11-5 heading into the home half of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Cunha and Padilla drove in a pair of runs, bringing SU within four, which is where it would stay for the final inning.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Maroons took the lead in the top of the first off a solo home run, but the Hornets didn't let the lead last for long. Dillon Mauzy delivered a bases-loaded single to tie the game, prior to Adham Sahebzadah drawing a walk to give the Hornets the lead. SU led 3-1 at the end of one following a sacrifice fly from Kemper Omps.

Kyle Garrett delivered an RBI single in the second, which scored Christian Carver for SU's fourth run. Two two-out doubles in the third allowed the Maroons to cut their deficit down to one, 4-3. Roanoke tied the game at four in the fourth.

Singles to start the bottom of the court from Omps and Brady Morrell helped Jaime Padilla and Garrett earn an RBI to push SU out in front by two, 6-4. Unfortunately, those would be the last runs of the day for SU. Roanoke went on to score 11 runs across the final five innings. The Maroons scored in eight of the nine innings in game two.
