Tyler Smith Helps Baseball Complete Nine-Run Comeback

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 6 Shenandoah University baseball program completed a remarkable nine-run comeback on Friday in a 12-11 ODAC win at Guilford College.

The Hornets (25-4, 9-4 ODAC) trailed 11-2 entering the eighth and proceeded to score 10 unanswered, which included the go-ahead three-run home run by Tyler Smith to complete the comeback over the Quakers (12-14, 3-8).

RECAP

Shenandoah and Guilford went scoreless for the first three innings, with the Hornets leaving a runner in scoring position in each of the three innings. Guilford broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

The Quakers broke the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning to grab a 7-0 lead. Kyle Garrett led off the sixth for the Hornets with a solo home run. JP Williams doubled, which set up an RBI single from Tyler Smith to make it a 7-2 game.

Guilford came right back and scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and another pair in the seventh, leading 11-2 heading to the eighth.

Garrett reached to kick-start the eighth for SU, before scoring on another Williams double. Following the double, Dillon Mauzy was hit by a pitch to put two on the bases, leading to Tyler Smith's first three-run home run of the game.

Following the home run, Anthony Arrichiello and Cole Ambrosius reached base and came around to score on a double from Jaime Padilla. SU now only trailed 11-8 heading to the ninth, after Avery Schaeffer pitched a flawless eighth inning.

In the ninth, Carl Keenan extended his on-base streak to 27 games with a leadoff single. A wild pitch and single from Kemper Omps pushed Keenan to third before crossing the plate on an RBI double from Mauzy. Now with Omps and Mauzy in scoring position, Smith faced a 0-2 count and crushed a ball to center field to put SU up 12-11.

Liam Stewart pitched the ninth inning for Shenandoah and went three up, three down with one strikeout to earn his fifth save of the season. Schaeffer (1-0) got the win for SU on the bump, his first of his career.

Smith finished the day with three hits and seven RBI. The seven RBI are tied for the second most in a single game for the Hornets.
