Bernard Qualifies for NCAA Outdoor Championships in 400m

INDIANAPOLIS - The 2026 outdoor track and field season will continue for the Shenandoah men's track and field program as first-year Roman Bernard has qualified for the 2026 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Bernard qualified for nationals in the 400m with a seed time of 47.28 seconds, which is 21st in the nation. The first-year's mark is a school record, which he set in the finals at the 2026 ODAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, placing him second in the conference meet.

The sprinter began his outdoor collegiate career with a 400m time of 49.96 seconds, which at the time was second best all-time for the Hornets. Across his next two 400m events, he broke his previous best before eventually breaking the program record at ODACs.

Bernard is the first SU first-year to qualify for nationals in an open event and just the second first-year overall to head to NCAAs, joining Wyatt Newcome, who went in 2023 for the 4x100 relay.

Additionally, he is the first SU student-athlete to qualify for the nationals in the 400m. The Hornets have had outdoor qualifiers in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Bernard will compete in the prelims of the 400m on Friday, May 22, at 5:05 p.m. CST. If he advances to the finals, that race will be held on Saturday, May 23, at 2:20 p.m. CST. The outdoor championships are held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this season.
