Softball Defeats RMC; Eliminated From Tournament by Averett

SALEM, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team was eliminated from the 2026 ODAC Tournament following a 7-6 extra-inning loss to Averett University on Saturday evening. However, Shenandoah started its day with a 7-5 win over Randolph-Macon College.

The Hornets (30-11) earned 30 wins for the first time in a season since 2011 after eliminating the Yellow Jackets (26-16). In SU's second game of the day, a double in the top of the eighth by the Cougars (26-17) put them in front of the Hornets, leading to a win for the Cougars.

RMC RECAP

A four-run second inning put RMC up 4-0. Payton Jensen hit an RBI double to score Aimee Ord in the bottom of the second for SU's first run. The double setup an Allison McQueeney RBI single, followed by a Cadence Rieg RBI. SU trailed 4-3 at the end of two.

The Hornets worked around a leadoff single in the top of the third by the Yellow Jackets, helping them tie it up in the bottom of the inning with an RBI from Kelly Hartman.

Jensen started the fourth with a single before stealing second. Then, with two outs in the frame, Brenna Westwood hit a single to right center, scoring Jensen with an RBI. Makayla Cox continued the two-out magic with an RBI single, putting SU up 6-4.

Westwood added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, which brought McQueeney home. This helped SU maintain the lead after RMC put a run up in the sixth.

Meghan Gaskins earned her first save of the season with three innings of work. Gaskins had three strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Gracie Ravenkamp (14-3) earned the win after going the first four innings.

The win marked SU's first postseason victory since 2019.

AVERETT RECAP

With bases loaded in the top of the first, the Cougars singled to get the first run on the board, but were thrown out at the plate by Makayla Cox to end the half-inning. Cadence Rieg and Brenna Westwood reached base to put two runners on in the bottom of the first and both scored on RBI singles from Paige Eagleton and Keagan Cooper. Cooper also brought Eagleton home on her single.

Defense dominated the next four innings of play as the score remained 3-1 in favor of SU at the end of five. However, in large part to a grand slam, Averett regained the lead in the sixth, 6-3.

Trailing by three in the seventh, the Hornets got back-to-back singles from Rieg and Westwood. Cox then doubled to score Rieg, bringing SU within two. Down to their final two outs, Shenandoah tied the game 6-6 on a two-RBI double from Eagleton, forcing extras.

In the extra frame, Averett took a 7-6 lead on a double. Sarah Medellin then singled to start the bottom of the eighth, but the next three Hornets recorded outs to end the game.

Rieg and Medellin had three hit games for Shenandoah. Cox and Eagleton joined the duo with multi-hit efforts.
