Team Effort Lifts Baseball to Game One Win Over Tigers

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball program defeated Hampden-Sydney College 10-1 in game one of the best-of-three first round series of the 2026 ODAC Tournament at home on Saturday.

Blaine Griffin (9-3) went seven innings on the mound, and the Hornets' (31-9) offense racked up 14 hits in the win over the Tigers (18-22). The Hornets need one win tomorrow to advance to the ODAC Championship weekend.

RECAP

A six-pitch first inning by Blaine Griffin sat the Tigers down quickly in the first. The starter then retired the Tigers in order in the second with another six-pitch frame. During that time, Carl Keenan scored on a double steal attempt in the first, and Christian Carver added an RBI single to put SU up 2-0.

In the third, Keenan singled and advanced on a passed ball, leading to Jaime Padilla earning an RBI single, which put the Hornets up 3-0. The Tigers scored an unearned run in the fourth.

A double by Padilla and an intentional walk to JP Williams led to Adham Sahebzadah hitting an RBI single that scored Padilla and put SU up 4-1. Tyler Smith singled during the next at-bat for a four-run lead. Then, Sahebzadah scored on a sacrifice bunt from Kemper Omps.

Shenandoah kept its 6-1 lead entering the home half of the seventh after Griffin got out of a bases-loaded situation. Graffin finished the day with three strikeouts, while allowing four hits and zero earned runs.

Smith scored in the seventh on an RBI from Omps. Then in the eighth, SU scored three more runs to conclude its day offensively. Dillon Mauzy drove in the first run, prior to Smith and Omps delivering back-to-back RBI singles.

Jacob Gilbert pitched the final two innings for the Hornets with two strikeouts and one base runner.

Keenan, Padilla, Smith, and Omps each had at least two hits. Omps led the team with three RBIs. All nine starters in the batting order reached base.
