Griffin and Sahebzadah Lead Baseball to Championship Game

TYSONS, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball program is headed to the ODAC Championship game after defeating Bridgewater College 3-2 in the winners' bracket on Friday afternoon.

The Hornets (34-9) and Eagles (33-12) were tied at zero entering the bottom of the eighth. Adham Sahebzadah broke the tie with a three-run shot to right center. Blaine Griffin (10-3) pitched a career game and is now second all-time for wins in a season after shutting out the Eagles for eight innings. Liam Stewart shut the doors on the opposition for the second straight game with his eighth save of the year.

RECAP

Blaine Griffin held the Eagles scoreless for the first two frames, only allowing a one-out walk in the first. Shenandoah earned its first hit of the game with a Kyle Garrett single to start the third, but couldn't capitalize. 

Both offenses went quietly in the fourth and fifth, keeping the game scoreless. The Eagles hit three singles in the sixth to load the bases with one out. Griffin got out of the jam, forcing a lineout to shortstop and a flyout to center.

The Hornets' offense drew consecutive one-out walks in the eighth, putting Dillon Mauzy and JP Williams on base. Then, after taking a first-pitch ball, Adham Sahebzadah crushed a ball to right center, breaking the scoreless game and putting SU up 3-0.

SU turned to Liam Stewart in the ninth. The closer gave up two singles, putting a pair on for the Eagles with no outs. Stewart struck out the next batter and got a groundout for two outs. However, consecutive singles by the Eagles made it a one-run game. It then only took Stewart three pitches to get the final batter out.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah plays the winner of Bridgewater vs Lynchburg at 1 p.m. in the sixth game of the championship weekend. The teams will play the if necessary game following the 1 p.m. contest.
